Ruth Parker was born April 14, 1941, in Alexandria, LA and was called home Sunday, November 17, 2019 at her residence in Simpson surrounded by her loving family and friends. Ruth had accepted her guaranteed heavenly ticket many years ago and would tell you quickly, “don’t be afraid but be ready”. She was always willing to go on a trip and kept her bag at least half packed. It was not uncommon that if she was asked to go somewhere, Ruth would agree to go, but then say “unless I get a better offer.” November 17th was a beautiful Sunday and Ruth Smith Parker got a better and her best offer. She took her heavenly flight on wings of angels that were sent to escort her home to glory. What a day, what a glorious day of victory in Jesus that was for her.
Ruth graduated from Simpson High School in 1959 as salutatorian of her class. She then attended and completed her course of study at Delta Business Training Institute in Baton Rouge, LA. After returning to Vernon Parish, she began working for Mr. Ted R. Broyles, Attorney at Law in Leesville, LA. Mr. Broyles was later elected as Judge for Vernon Parish. Ruth continued working for Judge Broyles as court reporter until his retirement. They worked together for a total of 35 years. Ruth then began her work for the Vernon Parish District Attorney’s Office for the next 7 years. The number of times Ruth’s fingers touched the typewriter keys and the number of pages of legal documents she typed is beyond measure.
Ruth was married to LA State Trooper, Retired, Vernon R. Parker for 47 years. They were the proud parents of 4 wonderful children – Curtis Parker, Karen Edwards, Kathy Monroe, and Jason Parker. Ruth was honored to have her sons, son-in-law, and two of her grandsons follow in her husband’s professional footsteps: LA State Trooper, Lieutenant Curtis Wayne Parker; LA State Trooper, Retired, Jason R. Parker, who was recently elected as Sheriff of Webster Parish; LA State Trooper, Retired Sammy Edwards who is currently working for the Vernon Parish Sheriff’s Office; LA State Trooper Brannon Edwards, and LA State Trooper Garrett Monroe. Ruth was equally honored with her daughters’ accomplishments: Karen Edwards has worked for the Vernon Parish District Attorney’s Office for the past 39 years and Mary Kathleen (Kathy) Monroe is a Registered Nurse, with Outstanding Achievement Awards and has worked at Cabrini Hospital in Alexandria, LA for the past 15 years. Ruth was very aware that the spouses of her children were vital to the family unit. Ruth as appreciated the love and support she received from Greg Monroe, Sammy Edwards, Kathy Parker, and Christy Parker. Ruth would often say how very blessed she was with her family and understood that when much is given, much is expected.
Ruth was preceded in death by her father, James Roland Smith, her mother, Mary Alice Bennett Smith, her husband, Vernon R. Parker and her brother, J. R. “Butch” Smith, Jr. Left to cherish her memory: Children – Curtis Parker an wife Kathy of Anacoco, Karen Edwards and husband Sammy of Simpson, Kathy Monroe and husband Greg of Simpson, and Jason Parker and wife Christy of Minden, LA; Grandchildren – Bradlee Parker, Ean Parker and wife Kristen, Brannon Edwards and wife Christy, Brent Edwards and wife Allison, Kaylee Adams and husband Jeremy, Garrett Monroe and wife Rachael, Alycia Parker, and Kirsten Parker; Great Grandchildren – Nate Parker, Madalyn Edwards, Olivia Edwards, Cooper Adams, Corbin Adams, Jonah Monroe, and Jovie Monroe; Sister – Ginger Stuckey and husband Charles of Simpson; Sister-in-law – Ruth Anna Smith of Simpson; Very Dear & Special Friend – Mr. Johnny Bolton and Family. Also leaving to cherish her memory is a host of nieces, nephews, and friends all of whom she loved dearly and would share a smile and a hug when she saw them.
Ruth loved feeding and watching her flock of birds, humming birds, and squirrels, viewing waterfalls, putting puzzles together, and mowing the grass on her Dixie Chopper. She enjoyed putting pretty flowers in the yard and would even “water” them to not give the secret away. Her philosophy on the flowers would be if it doesn’t work one way, find another way that does work. Ruth’s passion was “Celebrating Life” to the fullest-whether that was visiting with family and friends, or traveling to admire the majestic works of her creator. Ruth would want you to celebrate life the same way – sing like no one is listening, dance like no one is watching, love, respect, and forgive others as you hope for yourself.
The Parker family would like to thank Dr. Blain Broussard for the excellent care he provided Ruth for many years. They also are very appreciative for the insight and professional care Ruth received under the direction of Cabrini Hospice. Nurse Angie is remarkable and was truly a blessing. Thank you for the care and love you have shown all of us. God bless you!
