Norm passed away peacefully Sunday at home. He is survived by his wife, Nelda Clarice, of 56 years, his son Timothy Hovdet (Shannon) of Franklin, TN and daughter, Pamela Hovdet Miller (Paul) of Sheboygan, WI. Four grand-children: Abigail Hovdet, Amelia Hovdet, Matthew Miller and Collin Miller. Sister Rosemary Hovdet of Beloit, WI and brother Donald Hovdet (Jan) of Murfreesboro, TN. He is preceded in death by his parents, Leonard & Helma Hovdet, and sister Lois A. Clough.
Norm was born in Odin Minnesota in the family home on the family farm. He grew up to be a member of the Future Farmers of America – even showing a prize-winning pig at the state fair, coincidentally enough, named “Proud Clarice”. Norm graduated from St. James High School in 1955 and worked odd jobs and rotating neighbor’s farms as many did in those years until joining the Army in 1961. Norm achieved the rank of Staff Sargent during his 6 years of service. He served in Ft. Riley, KS, Babenhausen, Germany, Ft. Polk (where he met Clarice), and Ft. Eustis, VA. His time at Ft. Eustis was spent as the second in command living on a Landing Craft Assault on the James River, sleeping over the engine room. Quite an experience for a guy who didn’t know how to swim!
After the Army, Norm became a Fireman in Beloit, Wisconsin, married Clarice, and started a family. The move from Wisconsin to Louisiana in 1976 provided a 20-plus year Civil Service career in Directorate of Logistics (Combat Vehicle Shop) maintenance at Ft. Polk. Any track vehicle that rolled on Ft. Polk did so by being maintained by Norm’s shop. He also enjoyed helping coach his children’s baseball or softball teams.
In retirement, Norm enjoyed traveling and spending time with his family. Many trips to TN, TX, AL, WV, WI, MN, Europe and Korea to visit his children, their families and extended family. Norm also devoted many hours as the facilitator of the Alzheimer’s support group in Many, Leesville, and Alexandria. As well as volunteering at Helping Hands in Leesville.
A celebration of life honoring the life of Norman Hovdet will be held on Saturday, July 13, 2024, at Trinity Luthern Church at 11:00 AM with Pastor K.C. Bostelman officiating.
Visitation will be held from 10:00 AM until time of service. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Abagail Hovdet, Amelia Hovdet, Collin Miller, and Matthew Miller.
