Obituary for Regina Ann Wells
“We’ve come this far by faith, leaning on The Lord”

Regina Ann Wells or “Bug” as she was affectionately called by family and friends was born July 27th, 1952, to the late Delories Wells in New Orleans, LA. She was the first of four children, the first granddaughter of the late Mattie B. Wells and the first niece of the late Myrtle Wells Rock.
She attended Vernon High School and made history as a member of the first class to integrate Leesville High School where she graduated in 1970. Although they did not graduate from Vernon High, she and her classmates amorously referred to themselves as the class of ’69 ½. Regina matriculated through Southern University in Baton Rouge, LA where she received a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1974 and later received her master’s degree from Northwestern State University.
The embodiment of a public servant, Regina thought it not robbery to give back to her community in the form of a public-school educator in the Vernon Parish School System for 45 years. Regina was single handedly responsible for enriching the minds of thousands of children, many of whom still sing her praises today. After years of dedicated service and a career decorated with numerous accomplishments and special recognition, she retired from teaching in 2010.
Regina was an active member of Greater Bethel A.M.E Church from her early childhood. She served The Lord with gladness in various forms. She served as the announcement clerk, a member of the Stewart Board, Trustee Board, Lay Organization, Stewardess Committee, Women’s Choir, a faithful member of Wednesday night Bible Study and the treasurer of the Women’s Missionary Society. She served as chair for many programs such as the bi-annual Church Anniversary celebration and was always willing to lend her culinary talents without hesitation. Regina would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of her God than to dwell in the tent of wickedness as she stood her post as an usher, serving as president of the Usher Board and director of the Junior Usher Board.
“Bug” was also very active in her local community. She served as a member of the Vernon High School Reunion committee, Jubilee Park Committee as well as the National Association of University Women where she worked and volunteered tirelessly until her health began to fail. She built up a reputation for making a great potato salad which was always a popular request by many. She received her flowers while she was able to smell them by being inducted into “Who’s Who Among American Teachers” in 1998, and even received a community civic award for her beautiful home and yard.
Regina was an avid traveler who lived her life to the fullest. She loved to take trips with family and friends and go on cruises. Gina “Bug” loved her family and showed her love to them daily and in the things she did for them. She was also a great dancer and loved to do line dances, especially “The Wobble”.
She is preceded in death by her mother Delories Wells, grandmother Mattie B. Wells, sister Cheryl Wells, aunt Myrtle Rock, and cousins Gary Rock, Myrtle Collins, Gregory Rock and Craig Rock.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory one brother, Rodney Wells of Leesville, LA; one sister, Meredith (Rev. Louis Sr.) Wells Smith of Leesville, LA; nieces, Shawnae (Mark) Green of Atlanta, GA, Adrienne (Kyrie) Lewis of Charlotte, NC, Abril Smith of Leesville, LA, Khelsea Collins of Atlanta, GA and Natalie Wells of Leesville, LA; nephews, Louis (Tajha) Smith, Jr of Denham Springs, LA and Lamar Smith of Leesville, LA; two great-nieces, Abrea Engrum and Abrianna Smith both of Leesville, LA; two great-nephews Lincoln Green of Atlanta, GA and Bryce Chapman of Charlotte, NC; two aunts, Lucinda Carr and Ethel Wells both of Kansas City , MO; one uncle, Edward Wells of Kansas City, MO; cousins, Frank (Lynette) Rock of Indianapolis, IN, Charmaine (Aaron) Rock of New Orleans, LA, Gordon Rock and Rochelle Rock both of Hanover, MD and Marlon Rock of White Marsh, MD; and a host of other relatives and friends.
The family wishes to express their sincere thanks and gratitude to Maxine Wilson, Vickie Burrell, Tasha Robinson, Rosanne Dilly, Geraldine Harris, Annie Lewis, Brenda Lipton-English. Judy Conerly, Pam Anderson, Linda Fields, Patricia Gentry and Nurse Shelly Sturm from Elara Home Care for their help and support given to Regina during her time of illness.
Funeral services for Ms. Wells will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 11, 2021, at Greater Bethel A.M.E. Church, 909 North Gladys Street, Leesville, LA. Burial will follow in the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Leesville under the direction of Jeane's Funeral Service.
