Obituary for Zelle Johnson Garrett Nichols
Zelle Johnson, 91 of Hineston, Louisiana, passed on March 17th, 2021. She was born in Leesville, Louisiana on August 20th, 1929, to George Washington ‘Washie’ Johnson and Jeanette ‘Nettie’ Perkins from Cravens, Louisiana.
She is preceded in death by her parents and her husbands, James Henry Garrett and Grady Urban Nichols; her brothers, Earl Johnson, Archie Johnson, Ernest Johnson, Arthur Johnson, Kelley Johnson, Roy Johnson and Franklin Johnson.
Mrs. Zelle’s parents moved to New Caney, Texas when she was very young. She graduated from New Caney High School in 1946 and was named Miss New Caney. She trained and began work in the New Caney Post Office, later moving to the Cleveland Post Office. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Cleveland, Texas. After marrying she moved back to Louisiana in the 1960’s and began work at the Hineston Post Office where she retired as Postmaster.
After moving back to Louisiana she became a member of the Fellowship Methodist Church and was an active member of the United Methodist Women. She loved music, crocheting and traveling. She is remembered for her kindness, and timeless beauty.
She is survived by her children, Karol Edwards (Buddy), Regina Medley, and Melisa Bromley (Alan); and stepchildren, Glenda Worm and David Nichols (Judy). Four grandchildren, James Erik Edwards, Velvet Edwards, Ethan Bromley and Luke Bromley; and four great-grandchildren, as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.
There will be a ‘Walk-Thru’ wake at Fellowship Methodist Church in Hineston, Louisiana on Saturday, March 20th, 2021 at 11 a.m. The wake will be followed by private, family-only graveside service, due to Covide-19 limitations. The family service will be officiated by Pastors Danny George and Arlen Smith. Pallbearers are Sonny Johnson, David Nichols, Brian Hardisty, James Edwards, Kevin Johnson and Cory Johnson. Honorary Pallbearers are Reuben Edwards and Garrett Edwards.
