Obituary for Vernon Laverle Rachal
A memorial service for Vernon Laverle Rachal will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 16, 2023, at Gorum Baptist Church, 9462 Hwy. 119 Gorum, LA 71434, with Reverend Michael Dubois officiating. The burial will follow in Gorum Cemetery under the direction of Jeane’s Funeral Service. A visitation will be held at the church on Sunday from 2:00 p.m. until the time of service.
Vernon was born April 19, 1943, in Alexandria, Louisiana and passed away April 3, 2023, in Leesville, Louisiana at the age of 79. He grew up in Gorum and was a member of Gorum Baptist Church. He joined the US Navy where he served overseas. Vernon returned to Louisiana and lived in the Leesville area for most of his life. He worked as a foreman and a welder on offshore oil rigs. After retirement, Vernon raised cattle and enjoyed staying close to home.
Vernon was preceded in death by his wife, Jerry Dean Rachal; son, Michael; daughter, Melody Rachal; parents, Frank F. Rachal & Luedia Evelyn Cooley Rachal; and brothers, John Rachal & Lonnie Rachal; and sister, Frankie McClendon.
Those left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Mellonie Elizabeth Rachal Griffis and husband Christopher of Lena, LA;
grandchildren, Joseph Anthony “Tony” Desoto, Heather Page, and Patrick Levasseur Jr.;
great-grandchildren, Haylee Desoto, Joseph Anthony Desoto III, Dominic Johnston, Nevaeh Chase, Rodriguez Roberson, Ra’Keem Roberson, Kolby Desoto, and Brooklyn Desoto;
and a host of extended family members.
