Obituary for Verna Rosa Sumler Jones
Funeral services for Verna Rosa Sumler Jones, 76, of Leesville, Louisiana, will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 27, 2021, at Canaan Baptist Church in Leesville with the Reverend Jason Nolde officiating. Burial will follow in the Leesville Cemetery under the direction of Jeane’s Funeral Service of Leesville. A visitation will be held at the church on Tuesday, October 26th from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. and again on Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service.
Born January 15, 1945, Verna, was the only child of Wesley and Verna Sumler. She passed from this life at home surrounded by her precious family on Thursday, October 21, 2021, at the age of 76 years, 9 months and 6 days. They say that life is what happens in the dash between those two dates. Verna’s “dash” was a wonderful, full life filled with the things that she loved.
Attending Pickering High School, Verna was proud to be a member of the PHS Class of 1963. She completed a Bachelor’s in Elementary Education from McNeese State University, a Masters of Education and Plus 30 from McNeese and Northwestern State University, respectively. She also attended Baylor University to be certified by the State of Texas in Alcohol and Narcotics Education. Verna loved all 54 years in her career in education for Vernon Parish School Board as a teacher, administrator and counselor, but, she felt her true calling was found in the years she served as a counselor.
In the Fall of 1963, Verna was headed to McNeese State University on a bus and met the love of her life, Roland Jones, whom she married on August 14, 1966. Verna’s most treasured titles were daughter, wife and mother. She loved her children Amanda and Raymond unconditionally; they were her life. When her only grandchild, Avery, came along, she stole her MeMe’s heart! Her family was her greatest love, her greatest treasure, and the legacy she leaves.
Verna’s love of music, reading and traveling was evident. She deeply enjoyed her time spent in service with Delta Kappa Gamma, which she joined in 1978, and the Pilot Club of Leesville. She enjoyed many grand adventures traveling with her family and friends, but life with Roland Jones was her most grand adventure. The memories of her life with Roland along with her love of the 23rd Psalm and the Lord’s Prayer gave her strength in the latter years of her life as she bravely battled cancer.
Verna is preceded in death by her parents, Wesley and Verna Sumler. She is survived by her husband of more than 55 years, Roland Jones of Leesville, LA; her daughter, Amanda Jones of Houston, TX; son, Raymond Jones and wife Gina of Leesville, LA; and the joy of her life, her granddaughter Avery.
