Theresa Alberta Chance Nicks, 75, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 27, 2023, at the Woodlands Healthcare Center. Her family rejoices knowing that her Lord and Savior has welcomed her into His presence, fully healed and at peace.
Theresa was born August 14, 1948, in Plainview Community to John Meredith “Albert” and Audrey Hilton Chance and was the fifth of eight children. She graduated from Hornbeck High School and was a proud member of the Class of 1968. She married Bruce Nicks in the summer of 1982, and they had one daughter, Chancey. They opened their home to their daughter-in-love, Georgia, when she was five and spoiled her effortlessly. Her pride and joy were her three grand babies, Levi, Laina Kate, and Luke, that affectionately called her MeMaw.
Mrs. Theresa was a diligent worker. Her resume includes waitressing, driving a cab, store manager and finally as a paraprofessional at Hornbeck High School.
She never met a stranger. Mrs. Theresa loved people and enjoyed talking, visiting, and sharing stories. She was a proud member of Plainview Baptist Church and missed being involved with her church family after she was sick. There is no doubt that Mrs. Theresa can best be remembered for the countless and devoted hours of service to her community. She has left a lasting impact on so many because of her continued service to the Hornbeck Optimist Club, Hornbeck Youth Association, Vernon Parish Youth Association, Little Dribblers, and Dixie Youth that extended at least 30 years. Mrs. Theresa was a strong advocate of youth, especially youth sports, and loved all kids as if they belonged to her. She played sports when she was younger, thought every child should have a chance to play, and opened her home/heart to so many through years of coaching. Her competitive spirit will always be admired and will be missed. She could be found at any gym or ballpark with a score book in hand, running the concessions, or teaching others how to do both. Mrs. Theresa was Chancey’s biggest fan and supporter. She never missed an event and could easily be heard at any ball game or right beside her at any new adventure she tried. In most recent years, she could be found with that same enthusiasm cheering on and watching her grand babies flourish in each of their endeavors, especially on the ball field, basketball court, and recitals. Mrs. Theresa and Georgia were two peas in a pod. She took such pride in raising her and was so proud of Georgia’s gift in drawing and creativity.
Mrs. Theresa had other pastimes that she enjoyed throughout her life. One of her most favorites was sitting on her front porch where a lot of laughs were had, coffee shared, animals fed, and watching kids play. She spent a lot of time working in her beautiful flower beds, playing dominoes or cards with friends and family as well. Mrs. Theresa especially enjoyed her time spent with friends at the Hornbeck Senior Center whether it was crafting, dominoes, cooking, or just sharing coffee.
To be loved by Mrs. Theresa, was to be known by her. Her encouraging voice will be missed, cheering on all of us from the sidelines of life. Mrs. Theresa had a host of special people in her life that she loved big and will forever be special to her.
Theresa was preceded in death by her husband, Bruce Nicks; parents, “Albert” and Audrey Chance; two brothers, Nathaniel “A.J.” Chance and Gene Chance; and two sisters, Ann Smart and Doris Knippers.
She is survived by her daughter, Chancey and three grandchildren, Levi, Laina, and Luke; daughter-in-love, Georgia Coward; sisters, Eula Durrett and Sharon (Larry) Mason; brother Sherwood (Vicki); sister-in-law, Jackie (Theo) Thompson; and countless nieces and nephews.
