Funeral services for Sylvia Thompson will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 9, 2024, at Freedom Baptist Church, 50 Freedom Church Road Pitkin, LA 70656, with Reverend Jeff James officiating and Shannon Johnson and Janene Willis speaking. Burial will follow in Occupy #1 Cemetery, 37 Occupy #1 Road Pitkin, LA under the direction of Jeane’s Funeral Service. Pallbearers will be Nicholas Ortiz, Tye Turner, Paul Willis, Keith Mason, Macy Willis, and Bruce Thompson. Honorary pallbearers will be Huel Willis, Bill Cunningham, and Danny Wilson.
A visitation will be held at Freedom Baptist Church from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service.
Sylvia was born on March 11, 1937 in Pitkin, LA to her parents Bouvard Johnson and Eunice Henderson Johnson. She passed away on Monday, March 4, 2024, at Dorothy’s House Assisted Living in Conroe, TX. Sylvia retired from Boise Paper Mill after working in the payroll department for 35 plus years. Prior to that she worked as a secretary at Plainview High School before being hired at the Elizabeth Paper Mill. Sylvia enjoyed working with the Jesus Meal group at Freedom Baptist Church and her special friendship with the ladies in her text group known as the “Posse”.
Sylvia was a lifelong resident of Pitkin, LA. She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Bryant Thompson, father, Bouvard Johnson; mother, Eunice Henderson Johnson; two brothers, Roy Johnson and Truman Johnson; and sister, Janette Johnson Strother.
She is survived by daughter, Rita Thompson Patterson and husband Fred of Point Blank, TX; granddaughter, Leslie Cloud Ortiz and husband Ray of Anacoco, LA; grandson, Christopher Cloud of Alexandria, LA; great-granddaughter, Angela Ortiz Turner and husband Tye of DeRidder, LA; great-grandsons, Nicholas Bryant Ortiz and wife Emily of Pineville, LA and Jonathon Cloud; and great-great-grandsons, Tatum Thomas Ortiz and Tripp Allen Turner. She is also survived by her sister, Christine Normand of Vick, LA and brother, Charlie Johnson and wife Debbie of Sulphur, LA.
Sylvia had an adopted daughter, Janene Strother Willis whom she loved very much. She and her husband, Macy and son, Huel were very dear to Bryant and Sylvia’s heart.
She is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews. The family would like to say a special Thank You to the caregivers at Dorothy’s House Assisted Living for the love and care that she received during her short time there.
