Obituary for Rowena Annie Dowden Mitchell
Rowena Annie Dowden Mitchell was born April 3, 1917 to Henry Will Dowden and Virginia Lucreasie Funderburk Dowden in Kisatchie, Louisiana. She passed from this life on September 27, 2018 in Leesville, Louisiana at the age of 101 years, 5 months, 23 days. In the days before her promotion to glory, she was surrounded by her family and dearest friends. She was preceded in death by her husband of over 52 years, Roy Melton Mitchell, her parents, and many other beloved family members. She is survived by one sister, Inez Marze of Anacoco, LA; her daughters, Shirley Foster and husband Garland of Stonewall, LA; Judy Dowden of Anacoco, LA; her son Melton Mitchell and wife Kathy of Leesville, LA; her grandchildren, Preston Foster, Eugene Foster, Elisha Foster, Jessica Foster Stockman, Tammy Foster Traylor, Alan Dowden, Amy Dowden Alford, Heather Mitchell Tilley, and Matthew Mitchell, as well as a host of great-grandchildren.
Rowena was one of 12 children born to her beloved parents. As a daughter of a sharecropper, she spent the early years of her life alongside her Papa picking cotton. As a young woman, she learned to cook, took in laundry, and was an exceptional housekeeper. On April 30, 1945, she married the love of her life and began raising a family of her own. She was a devoted wife and mother, and a faithful saint of God all the days of her life. Even though her formal education was limited, she cherished reading her Bible, and was well known as a spirit-filled prayer warrior. With a servant’s heart, she took the greatest joy in preparing delicious meals for her family and friends. She is most famous for her cat-head biscuits. Rowena was a stellar hostess, opening her home to anyone, and making any guest feel loved. She was a cherished resident of the Anacoco community, where she resided for many years, and will be greatly missed by all who know and loved her.
Funeral services for Mrs. Mitchell will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 30, 2018, at Prewitt’s Chapel Baptist Church with Reverend Robert Cabra officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery under the direction of Jeane’s Funeral Service.
