Obituary for Robert "Mac" Darreyl McLeod

A funeral service for Robert “Mac” Darreyl McLeod will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 3, 2022, at Flactor Baptist Church with Reverend Donald Monk officiating under the direction of Jeane’s Funeral Service. Military honors will follow the service. A visitation will be held at the church on Monday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service.

Mac was born January 20, 1944, in Mobile, Alabama and passed away September 27, 2022, in Lake Charles, Louisiana at the age of 78. He served in the United States Air Force for twenty years, and during that time, he was stationed throughout Asia and served in the Vietnam Conflict. Mac loved riding motorcycles—in fact, he delivered newspapers on a moped when he was about 12. He was an avid fan of NASCAR races. His favorite race car driver was Dale Earnhart, and he had an extensive collection of Earnhart memorabilia collected over the years. Mac attended several NASCAR races both in Daytona Beach, FL and Fort Worth, TX. Mac also loved college football games—his favorite team was University of Alabama Crimson Tide, and he watched all of their televised games. Being an Alabama boy, that was only natural.

Mac loved taking trips to the western and northwestern United States with his wife Shirley, and they many times included Shirley’s sister, Charlene, and several kids on these trips. He was always the video man and has a 37-year history of family trips and family gatherings in his collection.

After he finally retired from 40 years of miliary and civil service, Mac enjoyed keeping up with the lawns for both house and field and would always say “so it would look like somebody lives here.” He was quite a character, and loved to joke around, but loved his “step” family like they were his own.

Mac was preceded in death by his former wife, Martha Lou McLeod; parents, William Coyt McLeod and Teresa Birdie Anderson McLeod; stepfather, David Franklin Belcher; brother, Douglas Kevin McLeod; and sister, Julia McLeod Stewart.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 37 years, Shirley Smith McLeod of Hicks, LA;

son, David McLeod of Hawaii; stepsons, Curtis Sumler and wife Tammy of Hicks, LA, John Sumler and wife Shellie of Florien, LA, and Timothy Sumler of Bradenton, FL; stepdaughters, Rose Schmotzer of New Smyrna Beach, FL and Denise Melton of Phoenix, Arizona; step-grandchildren, Michelle Schmotzer, Melanie Schmotzer, David Sumler, Amber Sumler-Quebedeaux, Laura Sumler Davis, Kallie Sumler Baker, Sarah Sumler Rice, and Leah Sumler; dear friend, Timothy Morott; and a host of nieces, nephews, step-great-grandchildren, and extended family members.
