Philip Reid Lewis was born in Leesville, LA on November 2, 1942. He passed away at home surrounded by family and friends on Oct 31, 2023.
Phil was the middle child of Hebert and Mabel Lewis . It was evident early on that Phil was the rascal of the family, and caused his momma to pray for his safety and his soul many nights. His older brother Billy provided advice and common sense, and his little sister Cricket proved to be a willing partner in crime on many adventures.
Phil loved music and when he was young, and played in a band before settling down to walk the straight and narrow and work in his brother Billy’s barber shop. Phil and Billy, along with an interesting cast of characters, worked together for 50 years in Billy’s Barber Shop.
Phil loved a good joke, a tall tale, and meeting new people, and he was fortunate to have a job where he was able to do all three on a daily basis. Much of the local population sat in his barber chair, and he listened, laughed, and complained about LSU coaching with many every day.
One day, Phil took notice of one of Billy’s customers– a lady named Mary Priscilla. Phil declared that he was going to ask her out, and Billy told him “no” and that he was just going to run off a good customer. Phil persevered and soon won her heart.
Phil and Mary Priscilla (he always called her both names) married in 1995, and laughed and traveled together for the next 28 years. Phil became Dad to Mary’s two daughters, and eventually PawPaw to four grandchildren. He was born to be a PawPaw and invented songs, stories, and fantastical creatures for each and every grandkid.
Phil also acted as an extra grandfather/uncle to Billy and Cricket’s kids, supplying them with candy, taking them hunting and fishing, and attending all manner of sporting events and dance recitals. He loved spoiling them rotten and being their favorite uncle.
Phil was a man of God and volunteered his time and talents to his church. He played drums in the band, parked cars, ushered, and was there to do anything that needed doing. In typical Phil Lewis fashion, he talked to everyone and made many feel welcome.
Phil leaves behind his wife, Mary Priscilla, daughters, April Doga and husband, Ben of Lafayette, and Belinda Savoie of Moss Bluff, brother, Billy Lewis and wife Ann of Anacoco, sister, Phyllis Watkins and husband David of Benton,
grandchildren, Emery and Alex Doga, Gavin Reid and Jacob Savoie, aunt, Doris Dowden, nephews, Trey, Mike, and, Blake, and niece McKenna.
His friends are too numerous to list, and his absence leaves a big hole in the lives of many. It is our hope that when you remember Phil, you make an effort to talk to more strangers, laugh harder, and love more each and every day. He will be missed.
