Obituary for Murphy O'Banion

Murphy Wayne O"Banion Obituary Murphy Wayne O"Banion " age 86, of Pickering, went to be with his Savior Jesus Christ, on Saturday, May 17th, 2014. Murphy was born in Beaver, Louisiana the son of Richard Dunn and Bessie May Welch O"Banion. He graduated from Pickering High School in 1947. He had a love of sports and education. He served as the School Board member for the Pickering community for 33 years. His tireless efforts supporting "his" school made the Pickering School system one of the best school systems in Vernon Parish and Louisiana. He was a life long member of Cooper Baptist Church. Murphy was a generous and caring man supporting countless organizations and programs throughout Vernon Parish. He was also an active member and leader of several organizations beginning in 1954. He was a member of The Grand Lodge of Louisiana Free and Accepted Masons Lodges Number 477 of Pickering and twice served as its Worshipful Master. He was also a member of The Grand Lodge of Louisiana Free and Accepted Masons Lodges Number 240 in Leesville, The Grand Council of Royal and Select Masters of Louisiana of Leesville, The Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons Chapter 51 of Leesville, and The Habibi Shriners of Lake Charles. He and his wife started their first small business, a small Texaco Gas Station in 1956. In 1961, over 52 years ago, he started O"Banion Oil Company that today is a leading and still growing small business serving South and West Central Louisiana. He was truly loved and respected by many and will be dearly missed. He was preceded in death by his brothers Clayton, Cledie and Dallas, his sisters Ruth and Aline and his grandson Todd Martin. Murphy leaves behind his wife, Pauline Bartlett O"Banion, his wife of over 65 years, son Michael O"Banion, daughter-in-law Alice, daughter Sue Martin, son-in-law Randy, brother-in-law, Burnett Bartlett and his wife Sharon, 9 grandchildren, Tracie Evans and her husband Tom, Amber Holt and her husband Marcus, Michael O"Banion and his wife Jessica, Astin Wilson and her husband Ted, and Kaycee Martin, 11 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of other loving family members. The family will receive friends Monday, May 19th, from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Cooper Church Baptist Church. The funeral service will be on Tuesday, May 20th at Cooper Baptist Church at 4:00PM with Reverends Edgar Evans and Bobby Ganaway officiating followed immediately by a graveside service at the Cooper Baptist Church Cemetery.
