Obituary for Melvin Elmo Townley
Funeral services for Melvin Elmo Townley will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 28, 2021 at Pine Ridge Baptist Church, 6026 Hwy. 112 Melder, LA, with Reverends Jason Townley and Dwayne Hyatt officiating. Burial will follow in Lone Star Cemetery under the direction of Jeane’s Funeral Service. A visitation will be held at the church on Tuesday, April 27th from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. and again on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
Elmo was born November 24, 1927 and passed away April 25, 2021 at the age of 93. He served in the United States Army Air Force during World War II. At a young age, he became a truck driver and lived in Oakdale, LA for many years. After he retired from driving a truck, Elmo moved to Hineston and opened a small engine repair shop. Along with his wife Janie, they owned and operated Janie’s Grocery and Gas in Hineston. Elmo served as a deacon of Faith Baptist Church in Oakdale and then became a member of Pine Ridge Baptist Church. He faithfully drove his family to churches to participate in church singings.
Elmo was preceded in death by his loving wife of 67 years, Martha Janie Robinson Townley; parents, Charles Howard Townley and Elsie Viola Braddy Townley; brothers, C.H. Townley Jr. and Otis Townley; and sisters, Alma Bennett, Yvonne Townley, and Shirley Townley.
Left to cherish his memory are his son, Larry Wayne Townley and wife Kathleen of Hineston;
daughters, Betty Jean Frost and husband David of Atlanta, TX; Sharon Bernice Boudreaux and husband Buddy of Iowa, LA; and Nelda Gay Ballard and husband Shannon of Sulphur, LA;
brothers, Roger Townley and wife Ann and Donnie Townley and wife Sue all of Oakdale, LA;
sisters, LaVonne Dixon of Denim Springs, LA and Elaine French of Perry, GA;
grandchildren, Lisa Pace and husband Jason, Angela Hyatt and husband Dwayne, Kristy Cogbill and husband Steve, Donald Richmond and wife D’Anna, Robyn Augustine and husband Monty, Julie Whatley and husband Timmy, Kerry Townley and wife Jessica, Merica Townley, and Trista Scott;
twenty-five great grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family.
