Obituary for Maxine Porche
Hazel Maxine Porche, age 94, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 15, 2014, in Leesville, LA. She was born in Manhattan, Kansas on February 1, 1920 to George H and Bessie Adams the third of four children. Max"s three siblings; Don Richard Adams, George Neal Adams and Myrna Madge Adams, also preceded her passing. After high school she attended beauty school and operated her own salon. She married Elwyn LaVerne Alter, Jr. on July 28, 1940 in Manhattan, KS and they had a daughter, Patricia Colleen, born on October 25, 1941 in Hutchinson, KS. Max & Elwyn were divorced in 1946. Max met Stan in Kansas where he saw her across a crowded room,and asked her to dance, thus beginning their dance of life together. They were married on March 12, 1947 in Puerto Rico where Stan was stationed as a Captain in the U.S. Army. A second daughter, Florette Rene," joined the family there on November 18, 1947. As the proud wife of an Army officer and the ultimate homemaker, Max loved entertaining, cooking, and dancing. She was a true" lady" and wonderful wife and mother. After military retirement in 1957, they moved to Orlando, Florida where they lived until both daughters completed their education. Eventually they moved to Mt. Vernon, WA where they enjoyed 53 yrs. of marriage until Stan"s death in 1999. Maxine was a distinguished member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority from 1945 until 2003, having served many chapters in leadership positions and receiving accolades for her service. Max and Stan spent many years happily traveling the USA visiting family and renewing lifelong friendships. Maxine was an active member of The First United Methodist Church in Mt. Vernon, WA. until moving to Leesville where she attended the First Christian Church. She is survived by two daughters: Pat Martinez, Leesville, LA, and Rene" Porche, Lacey, WA; two grandchildren, Mary Katherine (Katy) Martinez Grindal, Katy, TX, her husband, Lance, Scott Ryan Strickert and companion Nikki Olson, Mt. Vernon, WA; as well as two great grandchildren, Morgan Emily Grindal and Madison Taylor Grindal, Katy, TX. Memorial services will be held at a later date at both at Central Louisiana Veterans Cemetery in Leesville, LA where her ashes will be interred with her husband and at The First United Methodist Church in Mt. Vernon, WA.. Remembrances may be offered in her name to the Alzheimer"s Foundation of America, or to First Christian Church of Leesville, LA or to the First United Methodist Church of Mt. Vernon WA.
