Obituary for Master Sergeant Retired William Lewis Sr.
William was born on 22 April 1943 in Forest Home, Alabama to Webbie Dee Lewis and Dixie Carter. He passed away 21 October 2018 at St Frances Cabrini Hospital in Alexandria, Louisiana. At a young age he moved to Birmingham, Alabama suburb of Brighton with his grandparents, Horace and Bessie Carter. He accepted Jesus Christ as a young man and sang in his church choir. While visiting another church, he met Lonnie Mae Farrior. She would later become his wife on 17 June 1966. He attended Brighton, Alabama- Public Schools graduating in 1961.
After graduation, he enlisted into the U.S. Army as a Field Artilleryman. He served 26 years in the military where he was stationed around the world. His last assignment took him to Fort Polk, Louisiana where he retired in 1987. After retirement, he and Lonnie opened a small taxi business they called United Cabs. They had the business until the passing of Lonnie in 2001. After closing his business, he became the Grandpa with a passport. Where ever his kids needed him, he would pack up some bags and go to his grandkids. As much has he loved his kids, his world was his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 34 years Lonnie Mae; his father Webbie, his grandparents Horace and Bessie Carter and grandson William Lewis III. He is survived by his mother, Dixie Carter of Detroit, MI, nine children Sharon (Tyrone) Delaney of Gautier, MS, William (Tawana) Lewis of Houston, TX, Veronica Lewis of Lawton, OK, Horace Lewis of Clarksville, TN, George (Theresa) Lewis of Killeen, Tx, Gregory Lewis of Leesville, LA, Charles (Dalisa) Leesville, LA. Courtnay Lewis, Columbia, SC and Tiffany Lewis of Leesville. He was known as PawPaw to his seventeen grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He is also survived by many other family members around to country.
His military honors include National Defense Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Noncommissioned Officer Development Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Bars, Good Conduct Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm and Meritorious Service Medal,
