Marvin Lovelle Hilton was born March 23, 1939, in Hornbeck, Louisiana and passed away on Saturday, February 1st, 2025, at 5:45 PM at the age of 85.
To his family, nobody could ever compare. He hung the moon and stars for his family, and he prided himself most in his family. He loved each of them greatly and they all knew they were loved by him and didn’t doubt it for a second.
He grew up hard, the stories he would tell of his childhood included…just a couple of the times he ran away from home, once to join the circus or when he left to join the United States National Guard as an underage kid…anything to survive. Times were extremely hard during those years of the 1940s & 1950s. During one time of working, he shined shoes on Fort Polk as a kid at the ripe old age of 6.
During all his time working to earn money as a child, he would lock it in a bus station locker to keep it safe. At one time, his stepfather and mother needed money to buy a strip of land, and he took them to get cash. The two of them could not believe how much cash he had earned and saved up.
He was the story you always heard of, where one was raised with nothing, no education, no money, no future, but by the Grace of God, he was quite successful. He couldn’t read or write due to never being able to attend school and yet he never let that hold him back. He had a business mind; he knew how to do business with no education. He would tell his local banker how he wanted to set up his business loans to get the best advantage for building his rental business. At one point, his banker told him if he had an education, he wouldn’t even deal with him because he would be too knowledgeable and even more specific in his requests.
He loved to work; working was his hobby. Manual labor any day was his choice of fun over fishing, hunting, or golf. From time to time, you may have seen a red tractor driving up and down Highway 28, that would have been him. Once at the ER after one of his many mishaps from over working, the ER Doc told him, he wished he could bottle up his ambition and give it by injection to other generations. All while he was telling him to slow it down, the doctor was telling others to speed it up.
He retired from the Vernon Parish School Board after driving a school bus for over 30 years. The school kids loved riding his bus, as he would bring treats of various cokes and candy bars for special holiday treats. The kids would be tickled to get a special treat from their bus driver.
This story may sound like a fictional story, but it wasn’t. It was just a glimpse into the life of the man friends and family called Bub and we were blessed to call Daddy and PePaw.
