Obituary for Martin David Wellman Jr.
Funeral services for Martin David Wellman Jr. will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 27, 2023, at Laurel Hill Baptist Church with Reverends Sherman Busby and John Smith officiating. The burial, with military honors for his service during World War II, will follow in Laurel Hill Cemetery under the direction of Jeane’s Funeral Service. The pallbearers will be Shane Wellman, Jeffrey Wellman, Austin Wellman, Bryan “Bubba” Leggett, Frank McCauley III, and Mike Chaney. Dalton Wellman will serve as an honorary pallbearer.
A visitation will be held at Laurel Hill Baptist Church on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
Martin, 97, went to Heaven on Thursday, December 21, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. He resided on a cattle farm where his pleasure was raising and nurturing his cows. You could often find him riding his tractor cutting, raking, and bailing hay. Martin worked for Nichols Construction, was a member of Local 198, and retired after 39 years of work. He was a Mason and was a lodge member in his earlier years. Martin had the distinction of being the oldest member of Laurel Hill Baptist Church. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends.
Martin was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Laverne Smith Wellman; parents, Martin David Wellman Sr. & Carrie Bedgood Wellman; brother, Maxwell Glen Wellman; and sisters, Verna Monk, Freda Boswell, Exie LaCaze, and Lois Opal Wellman.
Those left to cherish his memory are his sons, Donald Wayne Wellman and wife Deborah of Gonzales, LA, Danny Gene Wellman and wife Deborah of Baton Rouge, LA, and Larry David Wellman and wife Nita of Baton Rouge, LA;
grandchildren, Shane Wellman and wife Kaylan Burgess, Alison McCauley and husband Frank, Holly Chaney and husband Mike, Jeff Wellman and wife Sarah, Jessica Ables and husband Luke, Crystal Landry and husband James, and Bubba Leggett and wife Danielle,
great-grandchildren, Kynsley Wellman, Slayde Wellman, Allie McCauley, Alaina McCauley, Mattie Chaney, Ariel Chaney, Austin Wellman, Emily Wellman, Lilly Wellman, Dalton Wellman, Jackson Ables, Alex Ables, Andi Ables, Sawyer Burgess, Korbin Burgess, Blaise Hebert, Cade Roddy, Cole Landry, Noah Landry, Erica Landry, Addison Leggett, Trenton Leggett, Nicole Guerin, Charlie Lato, and Devin Guerin;
and extended family members and friends.
