Obituary for Marna Gail Smith Boswell

Funeral services for Marna Gail Smith Boswell will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, October 14, 2022, at Hicks United Pentecostal Church with Reverend Greg Mortensen officiating. Burial will follow in Ebenezer Cemetery under the direction of Jeane’s Funeral Service. A visitation will be held at the church on Thursday, October 13th from 5:00 to 10:00 p.m. and again on Friday from 8:00 a.m. until the time of service.

Marna was born July 23, 1958, in Leesville, LA and passed away at her home in Leesville on October 12, 2022, at the age of 64. She married her husband, Rodney, at the age of 15 and was a hard-working mother. After obtaining her G.E.D, Marna first worked as a certified nurse assistant (CNA) while attending Lamar Salter to obtain her L.P.N degree. After obtaining her L.P.N, Marna worked at Byrd Hospital and Leesville City Police as a Reserve Officer. During this time, she worked the ambulance and med flight trips all while pursuing her RN degree. Her determination and dedication to nursing led her to work in all areas of nursing including the ICU, Labor and Delivery, Director of Nursing, travel nursing, and the Emergency Room – which was her favorite. Although her career was important to her, she was still an active and involved mother and enjoyed supporting her children at sporting events. She was her children’s biggest cheerleader- often times being the loudest person in the stands. After no longer being healthy enough to work in the medical field, Marna’s guiding force was spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She attended Hicks United Pentecostal Church and enjoyed reading and completing word search puzzles.

Marna was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Rodney Wayne Boswell; parents, Lovette Word Smith and Shirley Reid Griffin Smith; brothers, Larry Wayne Smith, Gregory Paul “Rusty” Smith, Charles David “Joe” Smith, and Rowdy Smith; sisters, Billie Welch, Kayla Sue Nichols, Sonja “Missy” Squyres, and Sandra Jean Smith; and grandson, Austin Michael Boswell.

Those left to cherish her memory are her sons, Rodney David “Bubba” Boswell (Jaime) of Boyce, LA and James Word Boswell of Leesville;

daughters, Mary Irene Boswell of Leesville, Samantha Gail Mahl (George) of Rosepine, LA, and Sonya Noel Haase (Randell) of Lake Charles, LA;

fifteen grandchildren, Justin (Holly), Joycelyn, Blake, Joshua, Brandon, Jada, Chelsea, Zachary, Colton, Chloe, Brodee, Paisleigh, Presleigh, and Paxton;

eight great-grandchildren with one on the way;

brothers, Reverend John Embry Smith of Leander, LA, Edward Lynn Smith (Pam) of LaCamp, LA, and Wilmer Gene Smith (Gayle) of Leander;

sisters, Judy Beatrice DeWitt (Charles) of Elmer, LA and Elizabeth Ann Smith (Leon) of LaCamp;

surviving in-laws, Herberta Smith Whitworth, Blanche Smith, Audrey Smith, and John “Willie” Squyres;

and a host of extended family members and friends.

Marna’s family wishes to extend a special thank you to the Heart of Hospice for their loving care and help during her sickness.

Pallbearers will be Joshua Boswell, Jack Causey, George Mahl, Tyler Fortenberry, Tana Thibedeaux, David Smith, Leon Coody, and Joycelyn Boswell.

Honorary Pallbearers will be James Boswell, Rodney “Bubba” Boswell, Randall Philips, Jerry Roberts, grandsons, and brothers.
