A visitation time will be held at the church on Sunday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
Saturday, June 26, 1999 Markel Jamal was born to Gary and Tausha McCoy. His two siblings Adjalon and Gary Jr. were elated and welcomed him home.
As the child grew many could see that Markel was a proper child. Being that he was raised in a Christian home, the word of God was common. He was taught the way of the Lord. This foundation was set, and it made a difference in his life. “Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old, he should not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6.
During his formal education he played the drums in the band and taught himself how to play the keyboard and became the first musician for the church. Markel was serious about God like none other - always on time for church and a faithful steward. Although he enjoyed all types of sports, basketball was his favorite. He spent the majority of his time making melodies unto the Lord. Markel hungered and thirsted after God’s righteousness and he was filled with the Holy Ghost and baptized in Jesus name at the age of 15. He served the Lord willingly and used his gifts for the glory and honor of God. He had no problem telling you when you didn’t do things according to the scripture – always with a smile and careful not to offend. Upon graduating from Leesville High School, he was currently enrolled at Alcorn State University in Lorman, MS where he was majoring in sports medicine/physical therapy and music. He received numerous certifications, whereas he took pride in his work. Although he was away from home, he would always find his way back to be with family and attend church services. “Forgetting not to forsake the Lord, and the word of God – he pressed his way”.
It was through one of his visits – we found that he was ill and as a result, the diagnosis was “Sarcoma” cancer in his sinus. The name Markel means a god of war- so when he heard the report- he said, “I’m going to fight this”- because he believes the report of the Lord- regardless of how it looked- and it looked pretty bad. He knew from his foundation that he could stand on the promises of God because in God they are yea and amen. The word of God is sure Isaiah 40:8 “The grass withereth, the flower fadeth, but the word of our God shall stand forever. It is the only foundation we have- and he stood. Many times the situation looked blink but God sustained him- it’s in our various sufferings that we know God and the power of His might. When you walked into his room- he looked at you – did a thumbs up and said “just trust the process”- letting us know that God got this- only believe. Sometime people visit the sick only to walk away more encouraged because the sick have encouraged them. Markel held on to his faith. Like David, he encouraged himself in the Lord. Many prayers went out for this young man… and he believed… his faith fail not- He knew Jer. 17:14 said “Heal me, O Lord, and I shall be healed, Save me, and I shall be saved, for thou art my praise.”
Markel had spiritual ears and eyes to see and hear the things of God. He was walking by faith and not by sight. So, fighting he did- always knowing- that it was his duty to wait upon the Lord and that God would keep on renewing his strength. And God Did!!!
For he was persuaded that neither death, nor life shall be able to separate him from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus.
Many looked on him and wondered how this young man was holding on like this- Markel held the word of God dear to his heart. He knew God is a man that cannot lie. That God was going to move for him- I can hear him say “Trust the process” would you just “trust the process,” and that he did!!! He was standing on a sure foundation.
As he was coming to the end of life’s journey, Markel shared the things God revealed unto him about the bright light standing before him. We knew he understood Phil 1:21 “For me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.” On August 3, 2019, Markel finished his course. He died peacefully, in his sleep at home. He knew that if that earthly tabernacle be dissolved, he has a building not made with hands. He kept the faith in everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.
As parents, sometimes our soul melted for heaviness, but because of his faith and determination, we were much encouraged. For we knew that his departure was at hand and he had fought a good fight, and finished his course, and most of all he had kept the faith. We “trust the process.” Jesus took him through. For he said, “I will be with you all the way.” Amen.
A life as beautifully lived deserves to be beautifully remembered and honored.
Markel is preceded in death by his paternal grandparents Jim and Nancy McCoy; maternal grandparents Clyde C Grant his great grandparents and Maggie and Oscar Grant; and one nephew Malachi McCoy.
Markel is survived by his parents Gary and Tausha McCoy, brother Gary Jr. (Daisha), and 1 niece Nevaeh, all of Leesville, LA; sister Adjalon (Dion) West, 2 nephews Caleb and Aiden (AJ) of Florida. Left to cherish his memory are a host of relatives, friends and saints of the most high God.
