Obituary for Luther Dowden
Luther Henry Dowden Sr. passed away on September 16, 2017, at St. Francis Cabrini Hospital in Alexandria, LA. He was born on December 19, 1926, in Montrose, LA to Rufus Henry and Cammie Moss Dowden. Mr. Dowden served in the Navy during World War II aboard the USS Saratoga. After being discharged, he married Vera Jane on September 6, 1947. They had six children – three boys and three girls. After moving to the Leesville area, he worked for Sartor Motor Co. as the shop foreman. He later quit to pursue his dream of owning his own business. After their children graduated, they traveled all over in a van pulling a camper. Mr. Dowden enjoyed going to McDonalds, Wal-Mart (walking around never meeting a stranger), attending church, and mowing the lawn.
Mr. Dowden was preceded in death by his parents, Rufus and Cammie; wife, Vera Jane; daughter, Barbara; son-in-law, John Williamson; granddaughter, Melanie Fitzgerald; sister, Betty Manwell; and brothers, Charles and Carl.
He is survived by two daughters, Brenda West of Leesville, LA and Beverly Williamson of Arlington, TX
Three sons: Luther Dowden Jr. and wife Kim of Pasadena, TX; Leslie Dowden and wife Marilyn of Anacoco, LA; and Lynn Dowden and wife Beverly of Leesville, LA
Three sisters: Shawnee Ashworth and husband Wayne; Mattie Grimes and husband Frank; and Judy Carver
One brother: James Dowden and wife Edwina
Eleven grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 – 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 20th at Jeane’s Funeral Service.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 on Thursday, September 21st at First Baptist of Anacoco with Reverend Durhl Davis officiating under the direction of Jeane’s Funeral Service. Burial will follow in the Old Anacoco Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Jason and Gabriel Williamson, Michael Dowden, Keith Allison, Max Mitchell, and Waylon Sylvest.
