Obituary for Loretta Bernice Lachney
Loretta Bernice, 96, joined her heavenly family on Tuesday, May 22, 2018. Like several members of her immediate family, she lived well into her 90’s. She was born on January 30, 1922, to Katie and Bart Jeane. Bernice was preceded in death by husband Wade Lachney; her parents; sister Grace Sellers; brothers, J.B., Samuel Lee, Cecil, Lonnie, and John R. Jeane.
Her only surviving sister-in-law is Georgia B. Jeane. She is also survived by nieces, Carney Jean Midkiff, Patricia Jeane, Shirley Caskio, Lynda Mitchell, and Glynda Baker; nephews, Donald Jeane, Ronald Jeane, and Kenny Jeane; great nephew, Joe Jeane, and a host of other relatives and friends.
Bernice graduated from Pickering High School in 1939 and up until her death was the only surviving member of that class. For 38 years, she ran Sellers Grocery at the corner of Hwy. 10 and 171. She passed many an hour greeting customers, checking groceries, pumping gas, stocking Cokes, and slicing deli meats behind the counter. She enjoyed baking, crocheting, and arts and crafts. She was born and lived in the SAME house until just 2 months ago when she moved to the beautiful new Woodlands Health Care Center in Leesville. She remained single while caring for aging parents until marrying the “most wonderful man in the world” Wade Lachney at the young age of 64, proving it’s never too late to find love. For 20 years, they reveled in being husband and wife. He introduced her to his Cajun lifestyle and she embraced it with joy.
The family would like to express their gratitude to her loving caretaker and friend, Diane Paddy. They will forever be grateful for her devotion, love, care, and constant attention to Bernice. Especially the last 2 months, where she remained by her side at the Woodlands.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Cooper Baptist Church on Thursday, May 24th.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 25th at Cooper Baptist Church with Reverend Edgar Evans officiating. Burial will follow in Cooper Cemetery under the direction of Jeane’s Funeral Service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Cooper Baptist Church or Cooper Cemetery.
