Obituary for Leverne Elaine Williams

Leverne Elaine Phelps Williams was born in Gandy, Louisiana on January 28, 1933, to parents Joseph Daniel Phelps and Nancy Lee Phelps. She was the sixth of 10 children. Leverne “MeMe” passed from this life surrounded by family at the age of 90 years, 11 months, and 22 days.

She was preceded in death by her husband, the one and only love of her life, Joseph Coy Williams, and all but one of her siblings, Libby Webb of Baton Rouge. She is survived by her two sons Joseph Coy Williams, Jr. and wife Susan, and Thomas Wayne Williams and wife Sandra; three grandchildren: Nancy Williams Anderson and husband Kenneth Brady Anderson, Lee Williams and wife Hannah, and Olivia Steiner and husband Ben; three great-grandchildren: Kate Elise Anderson, Sawyer Hayes Steiner, and Van Harper Williams coming soon; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Leverne grew up in a sand bed around Vernon parish and in east Texas as the child of a sawmill worker and homemaker. She became a Christian as a young girl and has always enjoyed going to church and serving God. She played basketball at Hornbeck High School, and after graduation, she began working at the telephone company. She married Coy Williams in 1957. They lived in Shreveport, LA for several years and then moved back to Hornbeck where she drove a school bus. She retired and has lived on “the farm” ever since, and she has faithfully attended church at Pleasant View Baptist and then Hornbeck First Baptist Church.

In her last two years, Leverne has been well cared for by family, friends, church family and caregivers, Kim Martin and Cassie Rains. The family would also like to extend their gratitude to the nurses and doctors at Byrd Hospital, Byrd Rehab, and Hospice of Leesville for helping care for Leverne in her last days on this side of Heaven. Rejoice with the family as we know that she is with her Lord and loved ones who have gone on before her.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 28, 2023, at Hornbeck First Baptist Church with Dr. Jack Bell and Reverend Jared Prewitt officiating. The burial will follow in Self Cemetery in Hornbeck under the direction of Jeane’s Funeral Service. The pallbearers will be Dre Alexander, Rodney Williams, Duncan Williams, Josh Corley, Jody Browning, and JD Redden. The honorary pallbearers will be Donny Webb, Ben Steiner, David Redden, and Charlie Comeaux.

A visitation will be held at Hornbeck First Baptist Church on Wednesday, December 27th from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. and again on Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service.
