Daddy was a man of few words. But when he spoke, you heard. He had a hand in raising each of us, from the oldest to the youngest. He was there for his family. He married the woman of his dreams on February 5, 1966. He got his dream family, taking on her 3 kids and never looked back. Her family now became his family, so that entitled him to treat each as so. Whenever any of them needed anything, he was there. He never turned his back on any of them. He even went and got one off a plane when she thought she was “grown” enough to take off to Florida. Another niece once called for help. Her car was not running right, so he went to help her. He got to her and assessed the situation. He told her the car was running “hot”. She told him “Then turn the A/C on!” Another time, his daughter and her friend decided to take her mother’s car for a “joy ride.” Being in 6th grade at the time, you can only imagine how this story ends! She ran it off a culvert and the police were called. The friend that wrecked the car was not in trouble but when Sheila got home her daddy reminded her why you don’t get in “stolen” cars. Some say you can still hear her “rubbin” her butt on the bed!! She never got into another stolen car. Lesson learned!
We were in ‘Bama at Aunt B.’s house, and Ryan and I were sitting at the table. I think Aunt B. made beef stew and I didn’t really want to eat it. Every time Ryan would look away, I would put a little bit of stew in his bowl. Papoo was watching the entire time. It took Ryan a little while to realize what I was doing. When he did, he was pretty mad. Papoo thought it was hilarious. He told that story more than once over the years.
Papoo was known in some circles, particularly in Austin, Texas, as quite the chef. His world-famous fried rib recipe has been shared widely, but none have come close to the perfection that he achieved. He loved his family and worked hard to support them, from wearing his A&M hat to honor his granddaughter Cassidy to taking his grandsons Ryan, Brandon, and Cody hunting in Alabama, to ranger riding with his great-granddaughters, Olivia and Julia, on the Ellis Unit, to his joy from having Jaxson and Justyn coming for a visit. If given the chance, he and great-grandson Arthur would have been best buds. He was a hard-working man. He didn’t take days off and always went to work every day. When he would get home, he would be outside doing more work around the house. He never stopped. Even after moving to Huntsville, he still worked, either cutting grass or working in his shed. He stayed busy. It had to be hard for him when he could no longer do those things. He was a great man who will be dearly missed.
