Obituary for Julio Vazquez Santos
Julio Vazquez Santos, a loving son, brother, parent, grandparent, great-grandparent, and proud veteran of the United States Army, has passed away on February 9, 2022.
The son of Juan Vazquez and Delores Santos, Julio was born on January 6, 1934, in Corozal, Puerto Rico where he was raised alongside his six siblings.
On November 10, 1953, Julio enlisted in the United States Army and served 23 years. He valued his service highly and attained the rank of Sergeant First Class. He was a Vietnam Veteran and earned many commendations throughout his career, including: the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Gallantry Cross, National Defense Service Medal, Army Commendation, and five good conduct medals.
Civic participation was important to Julio, and throughout his life he was active with the local VFW, American Legion, Knights of Columbus, Rotary Club, and Civitan Club to name a few. He was also proud of his work as a civil law notary and Spanish translator.
Julio is survived by his wife, Gladys Vazquez; two daughters, Gabriela Nazario & Wanda Klein; son, Pedro Vazquez; 11 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren. Julio was a stalwart man and always worked hard to be certain his family and friends were provided for. Julio had great faith in God and left this quote in part of his final testament that we feel he would have liked to share with all: “If you must cry and suffer, do it but for a very short time. Rejoice in the name of God for He will give you peace and comfort, and I will be with Him in heaven awaiting the day when we can embrace again and live forever in His glory. To my friends: even though at times it was hard for me to express my true feelings, I have loved each one of you like true brothers and sisters. If I have ever disappointed anyone of you, I ask for your forgiveness. Live a just and clean life and love everyone like I did. May our Lord Jesus bless each of you abundantly. I will be humbly awaiting to greet and welcome you to our big home in heaven. So long!!
A memorial service honoring the life of Julio Vazquez Santos will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 17, 2022, at the Central Louisiana Veterans Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Julio’s name to the VFW Foundation or American Heart Association.
