Obituary for Joseph William Pope

Funeral services for Joseph “Joe” William Pope will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 10, 2022, at Simpson Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Welcome Cemetery under the direction of Jeane’s Funeral Service. A visitation will be held at the church on Friday, December 9th from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.

Joe was born July 15, 1942, in Leesville, Louisiana and passed away December 6, 2022, at his home in Simpson, Louisiana at the age of 80. He served the students of Vernon Parish for many years first as a classroom teacher and coach before becoming the principal of Simpson High School and then working as a supervisor at the Vernon Parish School Board. While at Simpson High School, Joe coached basketball and baseball. He was named Coach of the Year for the entire state of Louisiana and led the Simpson baseball team to win a state championship. During his teaching career, Joe was an adjunct instructor of mathematics for Northwestern State University at Fort Polk and later became the Interim Director of NSU-Fort Polk. He was a published author and wrote two books – Marriage: For Better or for Verse and Old Testament Characters in a Lighter Vein. Joe was a member of Simpson Baptist Church and served as a deacon and a Sunday School teacher. In his free time, he enjoyed fishing and golfing.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph William Pope Sr. and Hattie Lucille Stephens Pope.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of nearly 62 years, Elizabeth “Libby” Pope of Simpson, LA;

son, Christopher Alan Pope and wife Lisa of Alexandria, LA;

daughter, Dina Diane Stamey and husband Joseph of Natchitoches, LA;

grandchildren, Michael Caleb Pope and wife Melanie, Noah Braxton Pope, Stephen Arthur Stamey, Josie Elizabeth Stamey, Diana Catherine Stamey, and Sarah Christine Stamey;

great-grandchildren, Michael Cameron Pope and Christopher Beckett Pope;

sister, Patricia Ann Mitchell of Santa Fe, TN;

and extended family members and friends.
