Obituary for Joseph "Joe" Atlee Gay
Funeral services for Joseph “Joe” Atlee Gay will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 29, 2023, at Good Hope Baptist Church. The burial will follow in Good Hope Cemetery under the direction of Jeane’s Funeral Service. A visitation will be held at the church on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service.
Joe was born August 28, 1936, in Anacoco, Louisiana and passed away July 25, 2023, in Anacoco at the age of 86. In 1955, he graduated from Anacoco High School then joined the Navy. During that time, Joe traveled the world on ships and would often spend months out to sea. A member of Frogman/Seal Team 21, he was a leader in the early space capsule recovery programs and appeared on the Today Show representing “The Teams”. He retired as an E-9 Command Master Chief. After retiring from the Navy, he settled back in Anacoco where he enjoyed assembling model airplanes.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Albert Atlee Gay & Annie Langton Gay and all of his siblings.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Charlotte Gay of Anacoco, LA;
children, Sandra Gay of the Dallas, TX area, Shelia Bush of the Dallas, TX area, and Joseph “Joe” Gray and wife Jennifer of LaVergne, TN;
six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; stepdaughter, Rhonda Farris and husband Michael of Natchitoches, LA;
and extended family and friends.
