Funeral services for John Douglas Belton will be held at 2:00 p.m.at Cooper Baptist Church in Pickering, La on Tuesday, September 5, 2023. Brother Edgar Evans will be officiating. The burial will follow at Canaan Cemetery.
A visitation will be held at Cooper church on Monday, September 4th from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. and again on Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
John was born on September 26, 1947, in Leesville, Louisiana, and passed away there on September 2, 2023, at the age of 75. He served in the army for three years after completing his studies at Evans High School, including one tour in Vietnam. He began his long career as a game warden for the Louisiana department of Wildlife and Fisheries Enforcement Division after earning an associate degree in criminal justice from Northwestern State University. He retired as the captain of region 3, which had seven parishes, ultimately dedicating 30 years of service. During his service to the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, John was awarded the “Lifesaving Medal” in the line of duty.
After retirement, he began a second career working in role play at Fort Polk, which he enjoyed tremendously. John liked the turkey season best and was an active hunter and fisherman. He participated in bass tournaments, was a member of the Bass Master organization, and occasionally took part in shooting competitions at wildlife conferences. John was also a skilled craftsman who constructed his own smoke house. He loved cooking venison and preparing jerky. He was an active member of Mason Lodge #477 and #147. He attended the men’s Sunday school class and oversaw the Sunday school records as a committed member of Cooper Baptist Church. One of his favorite pleasures was playing dominoes.
John was preceded in death by his parents, George Akers Belton, and Gwendolyn Nichols Belton.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 37 years, Vicki L. Belton of Leesville, La. He has three children Sharrie Boullion and husband P-nut of Ragley, La, John D. Belton II and wife Karmen of Plano, Tx and George Belton of Leesville, La. He also has several stepchildren and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. John has two brothers, Larry Belton of Garland, Tx and Curtis Belton and wife Jackie of Leesville, La. One sister, Sandra Colquette and husband Jerry of Katy, Tx. Also, numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
