Obituary for James Thomas "Tommy" Poe Jr.
A graveside service for James Thomas “Tommy” Poe Jr. will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 6, 2020 in LaCamp Church of God Cemetery with Reverends Shawn Waggoner and Jerry Twyman officiating under the direction of Jeane’s Funeral Service. The service will be livestreamed through Jeane Funeral Service Facebook page and may be viewed at www.jeanesfs.com. Please bring a folding chair to the graveside service. A memorial gathering will be held after the graveside service at 6054 Hwy. 121 Leesville, LA.
Tommy was born June 24, 1953 in Leesville, LA and passed away May 2, 2020 at the age of 66. He lived most of his life in the Hicks area and was a 1971 graduate of Hicks High School. He overcame polio at a young age, and this experience shaped his life. He never let anything stop him. Tommy worked in the logging business and drove trucks before attending Police Academy. At the age of 42, he graduated at the top of his class and was the president of his class as well. He worked for the Vernon Parish Sheriff’s Department for over 27 years first as a dispatcher, then Sheriff’s Deputy, and retired as a detective. Tommy was known throughout the community as a talented musician who sang and played the guitar. He played in church and at various community events. He was a lifelong cowboy and loved riding horses. Tommy’s love for the Lord was very evident in his life. He always put God first and was a member of LaCamp Church of God for 38 years. Tommy’s example as a Godly man will be remembered by everyone who knew him. Most of all, he was a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend to so many.
Tommy was preceded in death by his parents, James Thomas Poe Sr. and Johnnie Billie Burns Poe and sister, Margaret Poe.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of nearly 45 years, Virginia Smith Poe of Hicks, LA,
son, Joshua Poe and wife Kellie of Hineston, LA,
daughter, Kristie Marquez and husband Carly of Hicks, LA,
brother, Matthew Poe and wife Michelle of Hicks, LA,
sisters, Catherine Brogdon and husband Roger of Hicks, LA and Mary Joseph and husband “Larry” of Kingman, AZ,
grandchildren, Carly Marquez Torres, Andrew Haaf and wife Kendra, Krystal Marquez Torres, Isabella Marquez, Alexander Marquez, Abigail Poe, and Caylie Poe,
great grandchild, Talymar Delgado Marquez,
and a host of extended family and friends.
Pallbearers will be David Smith, Nathan Smith, Justin Robinson, Justin Poe, Don Poe, Joshua Poe, Carly Marquez, and Matthew Poe.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Tommy’s memory may be made to the LaCamp Church of God Children’s Ministry, 6889 Hwy. 121 Hineston, LA 71438.
