Obituary for James Edward Burgess
A graveside service with military honors for James Edward Burgess will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, September 21, 2020 at the Central Louisiana Veterans Cemetery under the direction of Jeane’s Funeral Service. A visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 20th at Jeane’s Funeral Service, 100 E. Union St. Leesville, LA.
The late SFC James E. Burgess was born on February 13, 1956 to his parents, the late Sammie H. Burgess and Grace Burgess in Lake City, SC. He was the 6th child of 12. At an early age, his family relocated to Deerfield Beach, FL. While still a young child, James gave his life to Christ joining Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church in Deerfield Beach, FL. James received his education in the Broward County School System, receiving his high school diploma from Deerfield Beach High School in 1974. While in school, James excelled in Cross Country Track. He enjoyed participating in various sporting activities including archery, horseshoes, bowling, and fishing.
After graduating from high school, James enlisted in the U.S. Army where he met his wife of 39 years, Ulrike Pabst. James retired from the U.S. Army in 1997 with 20 years of service and numerous military awards. Preceding him in death was his father, Sammie H. Burgess and sisters, Joyce Ann Burgess and Janet Burgess Holt.
He leaves to cherish his memories:
a loving wife, Ulrike; two sons, Marallis Burgess of Fort Lauderdale, FL and Jamal Burgess of Leesville, LA; two daughters, Sheila of Leesville, LA and Latoya of Dallas, TX; a loving mother, Grace Burgess of Deerfield Beach, FL; four brothers, Samuel Burgess and wife Carla, Robert Burgess, Rufus Burgess, and John Burgess all of Deerfield Beach, FL; five sisters, Sarah Brown of Miami, FL, Gwendolyn Giles and husband Oscar, Deloris Partlow and husband Steve, Charlotte Philpart and husband Kenneth, and Geneva Burgess all of Deerfield Beach, FL; four grandchildren, Leon, Errick Jr., Tabea, and Terrance; three uncles, James Burgess and wife Ruthie and Eugene Peterson both of Pompano Beach, FL and James Burroughs and wife Regina of Fort Lauderdale, FL; one aunt, Catherine Queen and husband Felton of Pompano Beach, FL; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
