Obituary for Howard William Butt

Sergeant First Class (Ret.) Howard William Butt of Leesville, LA was born January 20, 1961, and passed away peacefully in his home on October 15, 2022.

He is preceded in death by his parents, and brother Mike. Howard is survived by his beloved wife Heidi; his three sons: Eric and wife Kristy of Ruston, Justin and wife April of Calhoun, Joseph and wife Tori of Dubach; grandchildren: Payton Butt and Cassidy Butt; brothers: Brian Dansin and Steven Butt.

Howard enlisted in the US Army in 1980 and served his country and his community faithfully for over 28 years in the US Army, US Air Force and the LA Army National Guard. He held many jobs and titles in the military, to include Armor Crewman, Unit Supply Sergeant, and Construction Engineering Supervisor. Upon retiring from the military in 2011, Howard continued to serve as a DOD civilian, employed at Fort Polk/JRTC. SFC Howard W. Butt was extremely proud of his military service and accomplishments. He will be remembered for his uncanny and often witty ability to teach others, which stemmed from a genuine passion he had for people. A superior officer once wrote about him, saying that “he (Howard W. Butt) embodied what it means to be an American, a Patriot and teacher by believing in the fundamental concept of leaving the world a little better.” He has achieved this; he has improved the world; he has left a lasting impression for generations to come – especially to those who served and worked with him.

Howard’s hobbies and talents were many. As a young man, he enjoyed working on and racing cars and would later channel that passion into building guns and model cars/tanks/planes. Howard was a talented carpenter, who had a great passion for woodworking. He was a man who welcomed and enjoyed a challenge (although there wasn’t much he hadn’t already done). Mr. Butt was known to those who worked with him and knew him best as a problem-solver, a jack of all trades – the man who could fix or build just about anything. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time with his wife Heidi, his three sons, and his grandchildren.

Visitation will take place on Tuesday, October 18, 2022 from 10:00-12:00 at Jeane’s Funeral Home in Leesville. Procession will begin promptly from there to the Central Louisiana Veterans Cemetery where a graveside service/interment will be held at 12:30 PM. Full military honors will be rendered.

Uniform is civilian casual, or duty uniform, unless participating in services.
