Obituary for Herman Gayland Mitchell
Funeral services for Herman Gayland Mitchell will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 20, 2021, at First United Pentecostal Church with Reverends Mark Christian, Ricky Kay, Ken Pennington, Rod Buller, Steve Lora, M.C. Green, and Eddie Tilley officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Hill Cemetery under the direction of Jeane’s Funeral Service. A visitation will be held at the church on Tuesday, October 19th from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m.
Gayland was born July 11, 1949, in Leesville, Louisiana and passed away October 16, 2021, in New Orleans, LA at the age of 72. He was a lifelong resident of Vernon Parish and a member of First United Pentecostal Church. Gayland was a people person and enjoyed finding out how he was related to anyone he met. He liked being outdoors hunting, fishing, and camping. He had an excellent work ethic and loved to build. Gayland enjoyed working in his garden and raising all types of animals including a chicken, rabbit, buffalo, deer, and emu.
Gayland was preceded in death by his first wife, Jo Ann Lavergne Mitchell and parents, Herman Oscar Mitchell and Geraldine Mae Kay Mitchell.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Judy Mitchell of Leesville;
son, Kade Mitchell and wife Shaunda of Leesville;
daughters, Darla Kay Mitchell Sander and husband Merle of Leesville and Gayla “Huffy” Goodin and husband Mark of Hornbeck, LA;
stepson, Eugene Rogers and wife Tina of Anacoco, LA;
grandchildren, Jessica A. Sander, Justin C. Sander, Morgan P. Sander, Megan N. Sander, Markayla G. Bagby and husband Ricky, Kaylan Goodin, Brenden Carroll, Kamryn Alvarez and husband Jason, Kylin Jackson and husband Macy, Katelin Mitchell, Jenny Vasquez and husband Ralph, Justin Rogers and wife Jesse, Jett Rogers, and Charleigh Jo “Cha Cha” Dotson;
great grandchildren, Kolton Jackson, Maelee Jackson, and Aubriella Alvarez;
sister, Elaine Fox of Leesville, LA;
nephews and nieces, David Fox, Wayne Fox, and Lisa Dotson; and a host of extended family members.
Pallbearers will be Ricky Bagby, Justin Sander, Morgan Sander, Brett Pennington, Macy Jackson, and Jason Alvarez. Honorary pallbearers will be James Tibbitts, Danny Gilcrease, Raymond Martin, Ronald “Popcorn” Buchanan, Daniel Westmoreland, Bob Guidry, Wayne Fox, David Fox, Jeff Smith, Jacob Kelley, Jett Rogers, and Rennie Haymon.
