Obituary for George "Sonny" Link Hughes Jr.
On June 24, 2023, George “Sonny” Link Hughes, Jr., 81, of Leesville, Louisiana, passed away peacefully in his home. Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 29th from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m at Jeane’s Funeral Service, 100 East Union Street, Leesville, LA. Funeral services will be held Friday, June 30, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, located at 127 Sapphire Lane, Leesville, LA. Burial will follow at Longview Cemetery in Deville, LA. Pallbearers will be Ron Hughes, Robert “Lucky” Hughes, Thomas Hughes, Brandon Hughes, Lee Hughes, and Justin James.
Born April 6, 1942, in Los Angeles, California, to George Link Hughes, Sr. and Mary Hildreth (McCoy) Hughes, he traveled extensively during his lifetime, settling in Leesville, LA to retire. He proudly served in the U.S. Army for over twenty years, during which time he was stationed in Korea amid the Korean Conflict. He was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. At the time of his passing, he was an active High priest, having served as counselor in two Bishoprics. He was also a proud supporter & member of the NRA.
Sonny was preceded in death by his wife, Joan “Jo” Alice (Bennett) Hughes; son, George Link Hughes III; grandson, Daniel Todd Hughes; parents, George Link Hughes, Sr. & Mary Hildreth (McCoy) Hughes; and sister, Georgia (Hughes) Leforge.
Those left to cherish his memory are sons:
Ronald Hughes (Angee) of Fort Polk, LA, Robert “Lucky” Hughes (Debbie) of DeRidder, LA, and Thomas Hughes (Ashley) of Slagle, LA;
grandchildren: Brandon Bennett Hughes (Misty), Robert Hughes, Jr., Tiffany (Hughes) Horsely, Veronica Alice Hughes, Ronald Leon “Lee” Hughes (Meg); and Abagail Taylor Hughes;
great-grandchildren: Ryleigh, Elijah, Carter, Peyton, Amelia, Jordynn, Everette, Chandler, Renee, Chloe, Kira, Kylie, Kahlani, and William,
siblings Charles and Virginia “Jenny”;
dear friend, Justin James;
and innumerable beloved friends and extended family members.
