His greatest pride was serving our country for over 25 years in the U.S. Army as a Major and Chaplain. Many of his assignments were in the East Coast of the U.S. and included Europe and Asia and Fort Polk, Louisiana. Major Chaplain Mauricio finally retired from the U.S. Army in 2008 at the age of 74.
Prior to joining the U.S. Army, for over 15 years, Father Mauricio served as an associate priest to several Catholic church parishes in Southern California near his closest brother, family, relatives, and friends.
Some often wonder, as a young child full of mischief, why did he become a priest? “Clemente” was his mother’s pride and joy. He was very close to his mother. When she passed away, he was at a loss and determined to join the priesthood. He completed four years of priesthood training in Australia. In 1962, he was ordained as a Catholic priest in San Marcelino, Zambales. He was assigned to Sacred Heart Missionaries as a Vocation Recruiter where he taught young aspiring priests.
Beyond retiring in 2008, Father Mauricio enjoyed saying mass for the Spanish Congregation at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church (for over 10 years) and never missed a meal with them. He was greatly loved by all in the local community. Additionally, he had a mischievous humor about him we will all miss.
He will be remembered for his love of gardening and cooking. He was independent and resourceful making his catfish adobo and pickled, jarred fruit and vegetables from his garden. His close friends have shared that he maintained his own little “Garden of Eden” at his home by Vernon Lake.
Father Mauricio lived a life of frugality amid having all the means of being blessed. Rather than fly on an airplane round trip, he would drive across the country. With his faithful truck equipped with meals and gifts of homemade jarred fruit and veggies, he would drive and venture out to visit friends along the way to see his family on the west coast.
Father Mauricio is survived by his brother’s family, nieces and nephews, and numerous relatives in the U.S. and the Philippines.
Father Mauricio was preceded in death by his siblings, Tasing and Conching Mauricio, Conchita, Juanito Sr., Berting and Amparo Mauricio, and Agapito, Librada, and Roman Fabunan.
