On Sunday, July 2nd, 2023, Emilia E. Rivera, age 83, of Ciales, Puerto Rico, went to join her Lord and Savior. She has joined hands once more with her late husband, Carmelo Hernández.
Born August 26th, 1939, Emilia moved from Ciales to Bayamón where she attended school and eventually met the love of her life, Carmelo.
Emilia enjoyed traveling, gardening and cooking but most importantly, spending time with her family. She dedicated her life to taking care of those around her, making sure to touch the hearts of everyone she came across by sharing the love and word of Christ at all times. Emilia was a caring mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend, who prayed fervently for everyone around her. She was an avid advocate for animal rights and lived her life caring for every stray dog and cat that crossed her path.
Before moving from Puerto Rico to Louisiana, Emilia was an active member and deaconess at Disciples of Christ Church, Calle ComerÃo in Bayamón. In Leesville she joined Nueva Vida Church where she continued to serve and worship amongst her new Church Family.
Left to cherish Emilia’s memory are her loving children, Harold Hernández (Charisse) and Mildred Brown-Hernández (Steven); grandchildren, Harold A. Hernández, Christian J. Hernández, Emmanuel E. Hernández (Jessica), Eduardo A. Grau (Hailey), Natasha Morrison (Matthew), Alexander Brown (Marcella), André Menard (Lorlin), Tyler Broussard (Katherine), and Ché Broussard; great-grandchildren, Xantana Rose, Ryder Alexander, Ezrael Viktor, Freyja Lynn, Hendrixx Joseph, and Malachii Alexander.
Emilia was preceded in death by her parents, Santiago and Rosa Rivera, her daughters Rosa Linnette and Mayra Ivelisse Hernández Rivera, beloved husband of almost 61 years, Carmelo Hernández, sister Juanita Rivera and brothers Saturno and José Rivera.
The family extends deepest gratitude for their devotion and professional care to the kind and supportive caregivers at St. Francis Cabrini Hospital, in Alexandria, Nichole, Deidra and Kyle; as well as, Byrd Regional Hospital in Leesville, and her caring physician, Doctor Kimberly Landrum MD.
