Burial will follow in the Hicks Pentecostal Church Cemetery under the direction of Jeane’s Funeral Service. A visitation time for the family and friends of Mr. Smith will be held at the church on Friday, December 13th from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m.
Elmer was born November 16, 1928 and passed away December 11, 2019 at the age of 91.
After he married, in 1948, he was drafted into the Air Force during the Berlin Blockaid. Once state side again, he and his bride moved to Houston for work. There, he attended night school to receive his journeyman and carpenters license. 17 years later, he returned to Vernon Parish to raise his family. After he obtained his state contractors license, he began building homes, businesses, and churches throughout the area.
Elmer was a man of God with unwavering faith who put his heart into his church and family. His daughter was the apple of his eye, and his son was his pride and joy. When he wasn't working, he loved to ride horses and hunt quail. He took great pleasure in raising and training his bird dogs.
Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his parents, Richard Archie Smith and Dovie Louise Welch Smith; son, Ricky Smith; brothers, Oscar and Arlin Smith; and grandson, Benjamin Dewayne Smith.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 71 years, Inez Smith of Leesville, LA; daughter, Karla Wright of Leesville, LA; sister, Lois Bradley of Ball, La; grandchildren, Amber Wright Steele and husband Kevin Steele, Misty Akins, April Wright, Arika Wright and husband Mathew Treadway; great grandchildren, Kalie and Caleb Akins, Evan and Araya Steele, Lana and Shaun Treadway; and a host of extended family.
