Obituary for Dr. Otis B. Biggs
Dr. Otis Baldwin Biggs passed from this life into eternal glory with his Father in Heaven on the evening of August 24, 2017. He was born in Grayson, Louisiana on October 9, 1927 and was the only son of James Henley Biggs and Nona Baldwin Biggs.
His was a life of service; to his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, his family, his country and his community. He served his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ as a committed Christian and member of First United Methodist Church in Leesville, Louisiana. He served his family as a devoted husband to his wife Selma Copes Biggs, and as a wonderful and adoring father to his three children Catherine Diane Biggs, William Henley Biggs and Elizabeth Biggs Berry. He served his country as a member of the United States Airforce. He served his community, first as a teacher and then as a family practice physician for 57 years. He also served on numerous boards and commissions in Leesville and Vernon Parish. He was a long-standing member of the board of directors of Merchants and Farmers Bank and served a chief of staff at Byrd Regional Hospital in Leesville, Louisiana. He was honored by the hospital in 2005 with the dedication of the Dr. Otis B. Biggs ICU. He was also honored in 2007 as the Rural Health Practitioner of the Year by the Louisiana Rural Health Association. He most recently served as the Medical Director of the Hospice of Leesville.
His wife Selma and his daughter Cathy passed before him and he is survived by his son William Henley Biggs of Cotton Valley, Louisiana, his daughter Elizabeth Biggs Berry, son-in-law John A. Berry and granddaughter Virginia Selma McKenzie Berry of Mandeville, Louisiana.
He was cared for in his last days and hours by his devoted caretakers, Yolanda Roberson, Shar Dae Roberson, Gretchen Seymore and Mary Dykes, for which his family is eternally grateful.
He was ministered to and lifted up in prayer by the pastors, deacons and members of the First Baptist Church of Covington, Louisiana, who’s love and care has been of immense comfort to the family.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Evergreen North Central, 1412 Sibley Road, Minden, Louisiana 71055.
Funeral services for Dr. Biggs will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 1, 2017, at First Baptist Church in Leesville, Louisiana with Reverend Craig Forque and Charles Owen officiating under the direction of Jeane’s Funeral Service. Burial will follow in the Leesville Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 31st at First Baptist Church and again on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
