Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 22nd at Old Anacoco Baptist Church.
Mrs. Smith was born on October 15, 1923, and passed away on May 19, 2018, at the age of 94. Dorothy Smith, who was also known as Dot, Aunt Dot, Granny, or Granny Great, was born in Leesville, LA and first attended Old Anacoco Baptist Church as a baby. Her family traveled to different places such as Lake Charles, Port Arthur, and Beaumont because her daddy was a pipe fitter, so they moved to where the jobs were. They came back to this area when Dorothy was in Junior High, and she began attending Old Anacoco Baptist Church again. She remembered riding to church with her cousins in a covered wagon. She was on the high school girls’ basketball team and graduated from what is now known as Anacoco High School. Dorothy met her husband, Curtis N. Smith, when he was stationed at Fort Polk. After they married, they lived in France, Maryland, and then back to Fort Polk. Dorothy again attended Old Anacoco Baptist Church and was a faithful member. Mrs. Smith worked through the years as an accountant/clerk and retired the first time from the Vernon Parish School Board. Then she worked several years for the Louisiana State School where she retired and began volunteering at Helping Hands Storefront Ministry.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Curtis N. Smith; parents, Jimmy and Flossie McRae Atchison; and sister, Pauline Atchison Williams.
Even though Dorothy did not have any biological children, she always called Don, Joy, Priscilla, Dianne, and William her kids.
Left to cherish her memory are those she referred to as her kids, Joy Fondren and her daughter, son-in-law, and granddaughter; Priscilla Handorf and husband Lloyd and their children and grandchildren; Dianne Coffman and husband Cliff and their children and grandchildren; and William McRae and wife Pat and their children and grandchildren.
She is also survived by Curtis’s nieces and nephews; her dear friend and housekeeper, Charlene Chaney; her beloved sitter Charlotte Strickland Brock; her close friend, Becky Cavanaugh; and by a beloved young lady, Jessica Tebbets.
Pallbearers will be Larry Watts, Paul Gage, Joshua Handorf, Jacob Eaves, Jonathan Andrews, Billy McRae, and Blayne McRae.
Dorothy’s favorite Bible verse was Phillipians 4:13 I can do all things through Christ who strengtheneth me.
Donations may be made in Mrs. Smith’s memory to Old Anacoco Baptist Church or the Self Cemetery Association of Leesville.
