On February 9, 2023, Doris Sprague made her final journey to be with our Lord and Savior. Doris passed comfortably at home with her family and friends by her side. She was 89 years old and survived by her three children, James Sprague (Lydia) of Arkansas, Deborah Corpuz (Dave) of Hawaii, and David Sprague (Norma) of Texas and four grandchildren, Stephen Sprague (Sara) of New Zealand, Kimberly Samson (Jeff) of Arkansas, Jonathan Sprague (Amanda) of Arkansas, and Savannah Sprague of Arkansas. Her grandchildren blessed her with eight beautiful great-grandchildren, Myles, Amelia, Jacob, Xavier, JJ, Argus, Raelynn, and Isabella.
Doris was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Daniel Sprague; her beloved sister, Evelyn McCrea; and brother, Percy Snyder.
Doris Elaine Snyder was born March 6, 1933, in Brush Valley, Pennsylvania. She grew up on a crop and dairy farm. In 1951 she left her small town and moved to Washington DC where she worked Civil Service as a secretary for an Air Force Colonel at the Pentagon. While in DC she met her future husband Dan (while working at The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier). Their love blossomed and they were married on April 19, 1954. In the mid-seventies she worked Civil Service as a medical secretary at the old U.S. Army Hospital at Fort Polk. In 1984 Doris and Bernice Berry partnered together to start the Answering Service of Leesville, servicing the Vernon Parish area for many years.
Doris loved to sing, cook, and travel but not necessarily in that order. As a junior in high school she was selected to sing in the All-State Chorus at Harrisburg, PA. She loved to sing in her local church choir and treasured the beautiful memories she made with friends and family during those years. Early on in their marriage, Doris learned to hold down the home front while her husband was deployed overseas. In 1969, during one of her husband’s many deployments, she entered a subscription contest sponsored by the Leesville Leader and won by obtaining the most newspaper subscribers. Her winnings allowed her to take a vacation to her home state of Pennsylvania to visit her family. She made the 19 hour drive with three children ages 14, 10, and 9 in tow. She loved to travel with her husband Dan and during their 61 years together they traveled in their RV to forty-eight states but never made it to Maine or Vermont. On their 50th wedding anniversary, they celebrated by taking a cruise to Alaska and would often say cruising was her favorite way to travel.
Doris was fond of cooking and delighted in trying new recipes. On a rainy day you could find her nestled in her favorite chair with one of her many cookbooks looking for something fantastic to try. When she was able (and much younger) she loved cooking the Sprague/Werner holiday meals (all by herself) and would start days in advance making everyone’s favorite pies so everything would be as perfect as could be.
A funeral service for Doris is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 14, 2023, at Jeane’s Funeral Service in Leesville, LA. A visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service.
