Obituary for Doris Marie Kay

Doris “Marie” Kay, age 92, passed away peacefully on December 16, 2021, surrounded by her family. Marie was born on January 11, 1929 at Whiskey Chitto, to her parents, Wilburn and Lola Jeane, whom she absolutely adored. As a lifetime resident of Vernon Parish, Mrs. Kay was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, teacher, and friend. On the night of her high school graduation, Marie married her best friend Alton Billingsley “A.B.” Kay and together they spent the next 70 years building a beautiful life and family. Throughout her life, Marie was devoted to her family, friends, and community, always working to lift others up and help those in need, a lesson she learned growing up during the Great Depression. She worked hard in her early life, riding a bus daily to Lake Charles to earn her degree in Education from McNeese State University in 1960. Marie went on to teach school in Vernon Parish for 20 years. Never one to sit still, in her “retirement” she and A.B. worked at Fort Polk, participating in the Joint Readiness Training activities to aid the troops. An accomplished gardener and seamstress, Marie made the world a more beautiful place with her magnificent azaleas and camellias and the gorgeous clothes and quilts she lovingly sewed for her grandchildren. Marie is preceded in death by her husband, A.B. Kay, her grandparents, James William “Doc” and Laura Cordelia Jeane, her parents Wilburn and Lola Jeane, her in-laws Moss and Mattie Kay, her siblings Clyde, Jack, Malcolm, Milford (Pete), Lillian and Jeanette. Marie is survived by her son, Ennis and his wife Suzanne Kay, her daughter Penny and her husband Jim Williams, her siblings, Norma Meaux, Faye West, Margie Pace, Jerald Jeane, and Wilmer Lee Jeane, her grandchildren, Tara Kay Marler, Brandon Brent Williams, Jennifer Kay Templeton, Brock Nicholas Williams, and Matthew Scott Kay, and their spouses who all loved her as their own grandmother. She will also be missed by her great grandchildren, Campbell Williams, Jackson Williams, Devan Williams, Maizy Barkley, Wren Williams, Whitton Kay and Hadley Kay. There will be a funeral service to honor Marie at 10:30 a.m. on December 21st at the Canaan Baptist Church, 19190 Hwy 8, in Leesville, and a visitation at the church on Monday, December 20th beginning at 6:00 p.m. She will be laid to rest with A.B. at the Central Louisiana Veterans Cemetery, together for eternity.
