Obituary for Donald Ray Hughes
Homegoing services for Donald Ray Hughes will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 29, 2018, at The Church House, 2013 Alexandria Hwy. Leesville, Louisiana, with Reverends Lorraine Smith and Jerry Key officiating. Burial will follow in the Forest Lawn Cemetery under the direction of Jeane’s Funeral Service.
Visitation times for the family and friends of Mr. Hughes will be on Wednesday, November 28th at Jeane’s Funeral Service from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. and Thursday at The Church House from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
He was born on January 12, 1940, in Leesville, Louisiana and passed away on November 26, 2018, in Alexandria, Louisiana at the age of 78.
Donald was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest Hughes and Flora Bryers Hughes, his beloved son, Chad Hughes and first cousin, Glenda Howard Tharp.
Left to cherish their memories of him are his wife of 57 years, Carolyn Knight Hughes of Leesville, Louisiana, son, Danny Hughes and wife Leah of Lufkin, Texas, daughters Rhonda Morrison and husband Steve of Leesville, Louisiana and Susan Swofford and husband Trey of Leesville, Louisiana. He was known as Papa to his six grandchildren, Matthew Morrison and wife Meagan, Chelsea Hughes, Dustin Hughes and wife Lauren, Logan Morrison and wife Ronny, Ashley Swofford, Quaid Swofford and three great-grandchildren: Maverick, Mallory and Jude.
Pallbearers will be his sons-in-laws, Steve Morrison and Trey Swofford, grandsons, Matthew Morrison, Dustin Hughes, Logan Morrison, Quaid Swofford, and cousins, John Tharp and Glenn Tharp.
He attended Leesville High School and made his home in Leesville with his young family. He and his family later moved to Lufkin, Texas where they lived for five years while he pursued a career with Lufkin Industries. Upon returning to Vernon Parish, Donald “Don” embarked on an entrepreneurial journey which many locals knew as “Don’s Electric”. He successfully owned and operated this business for approximately 30 years. Don used his many talents to serve his family, his community, and as a long-time member and deacon of East Leesville Baptist Church.
Don will be remembered for his hard and honest work ethic, generosity, and his intense love of God, country, family and friends.
