Obituary for Debra Rae Bennett

Debra Rae Bennett was born April 2, 1961, to Ray and Virginia Gordy Bennett in Charleston, South Carolina.

Debra was preceded in death by her parents; maternal grandparents, Frank & Camille Nelson Gordy; paternal grandparents, William Henry Bennett & Amy Jackson Bennett; aunts and uncles, Marjorie Gordy Price, Jesse F. “Sonny” Price, and Douglas & Martha Gordy; and brother-in-law, Honorable Judge James R. “Jim” Mitchell.

Those left to cherish her memory are her sister, Michelle Price Mitchell; brother, Frank Allen Price (Pam); aunts and uncles, Carolyn Beebee (Barry) and Linda Powell (Herbert); nephew, Mason Basco (Patricia); niece, Amanda Basco Wellman; special friends, Jenny Poe, Rose Bruce, and Cathy Broussard; her three baby girls, Lilly, RayLynn, & Madelyn Wellman; Debra's spoiler and praying buddy, Craig Wainwright; and a host of extended family members and friends.

Debra grew up as an Air Force Brat, living all around the country but home was always Simpson, Slagle, and Hicks, Louisiana. Debra lived far past many medical professionals’ opinions. All though she faced many challenges, her parents always insured she had the best opportunities to live a happy, fulfilled, and as close to a “normal” life as possible. Many days you would find Debra fishing with her daddy, cooking with her mom, or visiting with family. As the years passed, Debra found great joy when people would stop by to visit, and she made sure everyone was taken care of and had a cup of coffee or a drink. She loved going to church to “la, la, la” as she would say.

Debra has been such a blessing to our family. Her life was always a constant reminder of God’s unconditional love because no matter the mistakes we made or if she was upset with one of us, she always wanted you to hug her, say I’m sorry, and she would always come back with “I love you.” Our hearts are heavy, but we know there is a joyous reunion taking place right now, and she can talk and hear the angels singing.

Our family would like to thank Dr. Lamme’ and the wonderful staff of Hospice of Leesville for their love and compassionate care of our angel, Debra.

Funeral services for Debra will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 1, 2023, at Hicks United Pentecostal Church with Reverend Greg Mortensen officiating. The burial will follow in Hicks Pentecostal Church Cemetery under the direction of Jeane’s Funeral Service. The pallbearers will be Allen Price, Mason Basco, Craig Wainwright, Brett Wellman, Barry Beebee, and Alex Beebee. The honorary pallbearers will be Herb Powell, Travis Bolton, and Danny Poe.

A visitation will be held at the church on Friday, March 31, 2023, from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. and again on Saturday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service.
