Obituary for Dan Marlin Horn
Dan M. Horn of Anacoco, Louisiana passed away Thursday, January 10, 2019, at the age of 81 years, 32 days. Dan was born in Magnolia Springs, Texas on December 11, 1937 to Thomas (Jackson) Horn and Lenora Isabelle (Bell) Nelson Horn. Dan was the eighth child of eleven born to this marriage.
Dan met and married the love of his life Ellen (Doris) on September 22, 1960 in Houston, Texas. Blessings to this marriage were a son, William Randall (Randy), and a daughter Dana Ellen (his other love).
He had a varied career – Attending Wharton County Junior College, Costemology School, and Southwest College of Court Reporting, before entering the United States Army on 23 January 1960. His military career spanned 25 years, working in Command Groups arenas for most of his military career. But he wasn’t finished, he then began a stellar career with the Department of Army as a Civil Servant, retiring March 2001 as a Retirement Service Officer.
Dan had a total of over 50 years dedicated to the betterment of our Soldiers and Family Members. In mid 70s, Dan established an Army Community Service (ACS) volunteer program that assisted young Soldiers’ wives and volunteers on how to complete a civil service application and to be able to use their volunteer service hours as job experience on applications. This program was initiated Army wide and is still in effect today.
Dan is survived by his son William Randall (Randy), his daughter Dana, and favorite son-in-law Tony. Grandchildren Joseph Daniel Horn Trujillo, and granddaughter Kaylie Lauren. Brother Leonard Horn, wife Mary, and brother-in-law T.J. Shelton.
Proceeding him in death, his parents, Jackson and Bell, and his wife Doris. Brothers and sisters-in-laws: Thomas Horn, Jr., (Mozelle), Arlie Ray Horn (Ladene), Bonner Horn, Mackie Horn, Raymon Horn. Sisters and brothers-in-laws: Melba Freeman (James), Billie Parker (Louie), Lucille Gregory (Bill), and Toy Shelton. He is also survived by his angel, his companion, and front seat occupier, the underweight beagle, Jed.
He was blessed with a God given talent which he freely shared, a musical ability unparalled, that celebrated the love of God with so many. Dan could make a piano or accordion, autoharp, organ, guitar, sound like no other. Nothing delighted him more than to sit down at a piano and play and sing to the glory of God. However, that wasn’t to say, he couldn’t throw a little Ivory Joe Hunter or boogie-woogie into the mix.
Ironically Dan had two birthdays, because he was born at home in the country, his birthday in the family bible written by his mother’s hand was 7 December 1937, but when the doctor finally did record it, it was recorded as 11 December 1937. Therefore he got to celebrate two birthdays, and usually did requesting a coconut cake with double recipe 7-Minute icing covered with lots of coconut, ON BOTH DATES. Though out his life, Dan was active in churches and Christian Organizations all over the world. Dan was Co-Chairperson of the Fort Polk Retiree Council from 1994-Present, Past President of the National Association of the Retired Federal Employees (NARFE), American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Fort Polk Commissary Council, Fort Polk Community Action Council, Gideons International, Founding Board Member of Barksdale Federal Credit Union, Past President of the Anacoco Parent Teacher Organization, Religious Concert Accompanist, Pianist to many local and foreign churches and organizations, Boy Scout Volunteer and Retired Boy Scout Assistant Scout Master, 50 year member of the Pickering Masonic Lodge 477, Scottish Right El-Maida and Habibi Shriners. And last but not least Santa to hundreds of children for the AAFES throughout Europe and the United States. There will never be another Dan Horn and we as his family and friends, are blessed to have called him Daddy, Dan, and Papaw (his most favorite title in the whole wide world.)
Verse: John 13: 34-35 A new commandment I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you so also you must love one another. By this all men will know you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.
