Obituary for Claytonia Lavon Rogers

Claytonia Lavon Wise Rogers was born March 19, 1945, in Leesville, Louisiana and lived a life well-loved until September 18, 2021. Her parents were Hannah Wise Broussard and Clayton Wise. Lavon graduated with the Class of 1963 from Pickering High School. The family will have a graveside service for Lavon on Tuesday, September 28, 2021, at 2pm at Cooper Cemetery in Leesville.
Lavon was a devoted wife and a loving mother, along with being a doting daughter, sister, and grandmother. She was all this against medical odds; after suffering a brain aneurysm at 16, doctors told her she should never partake in things as strenuous as marriage or as taxing as giving birth for her personal health. In typical Lavon fashion, she showed them! She married Henry Cain Rogers on November 22, 1963, (a date that would become infamous for the assassination of JFK!) and together, they raised 8 children and a slew of grandchildren.
Lavon and Henry were entrepreneurs at heart. They had businesses spanning from 7 auto part stores including Dixie Automotive Warehouse, Rogers Trailer Park and the General Store, a machine shop, a furniture store, and restaurants including Uncle Henry’s Barbecue. While Henry was the face of the businesses, Lavon was the quiet strength and backbone of the operation. They operated their businesses together until Henry’s poor health forced him to retire in the late 80s. From there, Lavon went back to school and graduated from Northwestern University in 1994 as a Registered Nurse. She began her nursing career at Doctors Hospital and Lifecare Hospital of Shreveport where she stayed for 15 years. She and Henry loved travelling, so she took a position as a traveling nurse. She retired from nursing in 2013, and she and Henry settled down in Kilgore, Texas.
Lavon loved music, playing the piano, and singing with her beautiful soprano voice. A devout Christian, she played piano and sang for many churches including First Baptist Church of Rosepine. She could cook to feed an army and regularly did to feed all the mouths in her extended family. She loved to sew and could craft almost anything; she made a range of dresses from simple to ornate and costumes that rivaled those of professionals, along with beautiful hand-quilted blankets, crocheted afghans, and ornaments for her friends and family. She loved us all beyond measure, and these treasures were just some of the ways she showed it. She was the magnet that drew so many people into our family, adopting them from all over and loving them like her own. We lost an irreplaceable treasure in our Momma and Granny, but we find comfort knowing she is singing with the angels and no longer in pain.
Lavon was proceeded in death by her husband of 48 years, Henry Rogers, her daughter Loretta Lavon Armand, her parents Hannah and Bruce Broussard and Clayton Wise, and her sisters Robbie O’Haver and Linda Wise. She is survived by her children Vertie Rogers Hebert, Henry Cain Rogers Jr. and Rhonda, Rosa Rogers Calhoun and Robby, Wesley Rogers, Blanche Rogers Akana and Jason, Brenda Rogers Gobert and Brian, Alexis Rogers Beard and Chris, and Ira Carl and Tammy. Her Grandchildren Danny Schnell, Brianne Schnell, and Matthew Schnell and Morgan, Jessica Dunsmore, Victoria Maxwell and Corey, Henry Cain Rogers III (Trey), Kaitlyn Holland, Nikki Zoeller and William, Parker Rogers, and Elizabeth Rogers, Margaret Kay-Alana Turner and Lairen Lea Glenn and Jake, James Armand and Tabitha, and Harvey Moton, Luke Akana, Caden Akana, and Blake Akana, Shelby Gobert, Sierra Gobert, Scarlett Gobert, and John Henry Gobert, Kristen Beard, Emily Beard, Amber Beard, and Sammy Jo Beard, Ira Carl Jr and Julia, James Carl, Ellis Carl, and Thomas Carl, and Chelsea Brocato and Shon, and 22 great-grandchildren. She was also survived by her cousin Verna Rosa Jones, whom she loved like a sister, and her nieces and nephews too.
Lavon loved wildflowers. If you see wildflowers on your drive to Cooper Cemetery, please feel free to stop and pick a few for her one last time.
