Charley Dewey Miller passed away on May 6, 2019, at his home while in hospice care and surrounded by his loving family. Dewey or “C.D.” was born on January 20, 1921. He grew up with two brothers and three sisters out in Stille, LA. In 1939, he married Tressie Carruth. They had three children – two boys, Lamar and Kenneth and their daughter, Mary Priscilla.
Dewey was always a hard worker and grew up picking cotton and working as a farm hand. After he married Tressie, he owned and operated a stump trucking business and worked for the Forestry Service. Later, he began a job at Fort Polk that lasted for more than 27 years. He was one of the original laborers that helped build Fort Polk and went on to work on military vehicles and tanks.
Dewey was proud to be a Mason and belonged to Fellowship Lodge #217 at Hineston. The Hineston Lodge is a chapter of the Grand Lodge of Louisiana, F&AM, which is recognized by the United Grand Lodge of England. Dewey enjoyed his time as a Mason and attended meetings for many years.
Dewey was a strong man of God and served as a deacon at Laurel Hill Baptist Church and in other various roles for many, many years. Dewey was known to be a man of great patience, wisdom, and was well-respected in the community.
He enjoyed woodworking, and often made furniture to give to his family. He could also fix anything or grow anything, and many in the community enjoyed the bounty of his garden.
He never really got over the death of his beloved wife, Tressie, but he was devoted to his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. They were equally devoted to him. We will miss him terribly.
Dewey was preceded in death by his wife of 73 years, Tressie Carruth Miller; parents, Charley and Olive Miller; sisters, Venson Monk, Myrtle Gallion and Tressie Monk; and brothers, Roark Miller and Harold Miller.
