Augustus Burks
August 18, 1953 - March 7, 2020
Augustus “Gus” Burks was born to the late Richard Burks, Sr., and Bettie Mae Hicks. He accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at West Beulah BC in Beaumont, TX under the leadership of the late Rev. Robert E. Campbell, Sr.
Gus Graduated from Beaumont High School in 1972 and served a tour in the United States Army where he had the good fortune of serving in Korea with his big brother. We had some great times together because Gus was always the life of the party in our family “never a bad day” or a “dull moment”.
He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents who raised him, James and Bertha Thompson of Beaumont, TX.
Augustus leaves to cherish his memories: one son, Augustus Rhodes (Tia) of Virginia and one daughter, Maronda K. Parrott of Dallas, TX; two grandkids, Augustus Rhodes, Jr., and Andriea Rhodes; two sisters, Stella Mae Chapple of Virginia and Betty Virginia Burks of Killeen, TX and five brothers; Richard Thompson (Theresa) of San Antonio, TX; LC Thompson (Vicki) of Dallas TX; James Thompson (Janis) of Beaumont, TX; Christopher Cook of Atlanta, GA and Michael E. Cook (Cynthia) of Tampa, FL and three aunts; Estell Williams of Sacramento, CA; Addie B. Taylor and Ethel Burks of Natchitoches, LA. Gus is further survived by a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and numerous lifelong friends.
A funeral service for Augustus will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 21, 2020 at Ellen Burr Baptist Church, 1346 Pine Road Leesville, LA. Military honors will follow the service, and a private burial will take place in the Central Louisiana Veterans Cemetery under the direction of Jeane’s Funeral Service. Visitation times for the family and friends of Augustus will be held at the church from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, March 20th and again on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
