Obituary for Alton "A.B." Kay
Leesville-Alton Billingsley Kay “A.B.”, 91, died Tuesday, May 16, 2017 at Byrd Memorial Hospital in Leesville, LA following a brief illness.

A.B. was preceded in death by his parents, Moss and Mattie Kay; sister, Geraldine Mitchell; and brothers, Monford Kay, Jack Kay and Lynn Kay.

Left to cherish his memory are:

Wife of 70 years: Marie ( Jeane) Kay

Son: Ennis Kay and wife Suzanne of Mandeville, LA

Daughter: Penny Williams and husband Jim of Leesville, LA

Sister: Joy Haymon and husband Hubert of Youngsville, LA

Grandchildren: Tara Marler, Brandon Williams, Jennifer Templeton, Brock Williams, and Scott Kay

Great grandchildren: Campbell Williams, Jackson Williams, Devan Williams, Maizy Barkley, Whitton Kay, and Hadley Kay

A host of extended family and friends

Born and raised in Vernon parish, LA, the son of Moss and Mattie Billingsley Kay, A.B. lived and worked for a short period of time in Beaumont, Texas. Thereafter, he returned to Leesville, LA where he resided for the remainder of his life.

In his early years, A.B. worked on the family farm with his father and mother, brothers and sisters, and helped his family survive the great depression years. After graduating from Leesville High School in 1942, at the age of 16, he worked in Beaumont, Texas as a welder building ships needed for the United States Merchant Marine. In 1944, he joined the Merchant Marine where he served as an oiler on tankers and general cargo ships until the end of the war. His service in the Merchant Marine took him to the Atlantic, Pacific, Mediterranean, and Indian Oceans in support of the United States military war effort. A.B. earned his engineer license and continued to work on ships until 1947.

After he departed the Merchant Marine service, A.B. worked at various jobs before starting his own business. When he retired from his own business, he obtained his real estate license. He worked as a real estate agent for approximately 25 years.

A.B. had a passion for fishing, especially trot lining for catfish, and for airplanes. He earned his private pilot license and was the proud owner of two airplanes. He especially enjoyed flying family members to various destinations. Another favorite pastime was to play dominoes and bump with friends and family. He was musically talented, as were several of his family members. His chosen instrument was the guitar. When he was young, he often played his guitar with friends and family, and at small local dances. While sailing during World War II, he took is guitar with him and played it for shipmates.

Services for A.B. will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, May 19, 2017, at Canaan Baptist Church, 19190 Hwy. 8 Leesville, LA 71446, with reverend Ricky Kay officiating under the direction of Jeane’s Funeral Service. Interment will follow in the Central Louisiana Veterans Cemetery at Fort Polk, LA.

Visitation will begin at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 18, 2017, at Canaan Baptist Church.
