In Loving Memory
Allen W. “Ike” Garman
Ike was born December 20, 1932, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He left his earthly family and joined the family of God July 20, 2023, at the wonderful age of 90 years and 7 months. He was the son of William H. Garman and Carrie Sonon Garman. Ike was a hard worker even from a very young age. He would make money cutting grass for his neighbors and would catch pigeons at night to sell them at the town market. At the age of 15, he went to work at a local stone quarry. It wasn’t long until he could operate every piece of equipment that was used in the quarry – bulldozers, dump trucks, and excavators. He would bring everything he made home and give it to his mother. She would buy extra food, clothes, and shoes with the money. Ike was drafted into the Army at age 20 during the Korean War. He attended his basic training at Fort Lee, Virginia. His first tour was to Bamberg, Germany where he was assigned to a medical attachment and drove an ambulance. It was here he decided to go into the medical field, and he trained at the hospital in Germany. While there, he met and married Hilda, his first wife. From this marriage came their children – Dona, Ronald, and Susan. He attended LPN training and transferred to Fort Benning, Georgia where he worked in the hospital. From Fort Benning, he came to Fort Polk, Louisiana and worked in the hospital as a Ward Master. When he left Fort Polk, he was sent to Vietnam for a year. After the tour in Vietnam, he returned to Germany with his family then back to Fort Polk where he worked in the hospital as Chief Ward Master. After 21 years, Ike retired from the Army, but being the dedicated worker that he was, he completed an air, electrical, and heat training program before opening his own successful business. For 21 years, he served his community through Ike’s A/C & Heat. When his wife Hilda passed away, it was a very difficult time for Ike and his family. He decided to retire a second time to do a little traveling and hunting. Soon afterwards he met and married his second wife, Lynda. They spent 26 wonderful years together.
Ike was preceded in death by his first wife, Hilda Garman; parents, William and Carrie Garman; and three sisters, Violet, Beatrice, and Elsie.
