Obituary for Larry Olen Goins
Larry Olen Goins, 83, of Leesville, Louisiana died March 27, 2020 in Alexandria, Louisiana with his family by his side.
Born the eldest son of Milton and Elsie Lowery Goins, Larry was a lifelong resident of Leesville. Growing up he had many adventures with his brothers, Don and James. He held many jobs growing up including working at the family business, 171 City Services Gas Station and mowing lawns for many of their neighbors. He spent many hours with his friends in the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts.
Larry was a proud Wampus Cat. As a 1954 graduate of Leesville High School, he was an All-district member of the Basketball and Track Teams. He was always supporting LHS. He was an organizer of the Wampus Cat Club of which he served as President. As a Century Club member of the LHS alumni association, he served as President for two terms and was selected as Alumnus of the Year. Larry helped organize the LHS Band Parents Association and served as President for two terms. He worked tirelessly for these organizations to raise money for the programs at Leesville High. For over 50 years, he had his seats in Wampus Cat Stadium on the 50 yard line and could be “heard” on Friday nights cheering on the Wampus Cats.
After high school, Larry attended Centenary College where he was a member of the Centenary College Choir. Larry served in the National Guard and then went to work for the Postal Service for 40 years. The Postal Service is what sent him to Lufkin, Texas where he met his love of 59 years, Velma Baker Goins. Everyone who knew him knows that he was at the window of the post office and greeted everyone with a smile, and he always had a joke or a story for them.
Over the years, Larry was involved in many other organizations including being a 50 year member and past Master of the Leesville Masonic Lodge #240, Shriner’s, Boy Scout Leader, and coached Little League baseball.
Larry loved God, his family, and his Church. He was a longtime member of East Leesville Baptist Church where he served as Music Director for 17 years. During this time, the ELBC Choir would join with the Centenary College Choir in performing at the Hodges Gardens Easter Sunrise Service.
After his retirement, Larry spent countless hours with the “ROMEO’S” eating breakfast at various restaurants around town. He enjoyed telling tales of Leesville History with his friends.
Larry was very proud of his family and enjoyed spending time with them. As a Dad, he was always involved in projects for his children. As a PawPaw, he couldn’t have been prouder. He loved cheering on his grandsons in any endeavor from Tee-Ball to Varsity Football or Baseball to theatre or academics. He was their biggest fan. He loved his granddaughters and enjoyed all of the time he got to spend with them.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Milton and Elsie Goins and his brother, Don Goins.
Larry is survived by his wife, Velma Baker Goins of Leesville, Daughter, Renita Goins Page (Paul) of Leesville, Sons John Milton Goins of Hornbeck, Kenneth Olen Goins (Trisha) of Colleyville, TX, Grandchildren Justin Casey Goins of Anacoco, Clinton Matthew Goins (Allie) of Hornbeck, Matthew Thomas Davis (Laura) of Baton Rouge, Ashley Patricia Goins and Addison Mackenzie Goins of Colleyville, TX, Brother, James Goins (Jean) of Shreveport, Sister-in-law, Sarah Goins of Leesville, and host of nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 28th at Jeane’s Funeral Service, 100 E. Union St. Leesville. A private graveside service officiated by Pastor Tommy Kiker will be held in Leesville Cemetery under the direction of Jeane’s Funeral Service.
