Obituary for Luther Levell Despino
A funeral service for Luther Levell Despino will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 20, 2018, at Pine Grove Baptist Church in Mora, LA under the direction of Jeane’s Funeral Service.
Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at Pine Grove on Tuesday.
Mr. Luther Despino, age 84, of Kisatchie went to be with the Lord on the morning of February 18, 2018. “Bro. Luther” as he was known to many, was a Baptist Minister for almost fifty years. During that time, he pastored several country churches. He loved to fish, hunt and garden, mechanic, building anything, and even drove his own wagons.
He had a passion for horses and loved the simple country life. Just about everyone he came in contact with received fresh vegetables from his garden because he loved to share his blessings.
And if you visited for a while, he would get around to telling you about “Pete” his white mule. He would start laughing as he reminisced about all the old memories he had of Pete, who was used from plowing, to pleasure riding, to being just a plain old mule, whom the whole family enjoyed.
Many times he was heard saying, “This old world is not my home, I’ve got a heavenly home up yonder.” And as he would point toward the sky, he would say, “And that’s where I’m headin’ ”.
Mr. Luther was preceded in death by his father, Joe Despino and his mother, Addie Guinn Despino; six brothers, Sam, Bobbie “J.V.”, Willie, Frank, Johnnie, and Robert; and son, Roger Arron Despino.
The loved ones left to cherish his memories are his wife of 21 years, Wanda Poe Despino of Kisatchie.
Also left behind is his 14 year old son, Zach who was the apple of his eye. Zach never left his Daddy’s side when he needed him the most.
Three sons and a daughter, Peanut and wife Sherry of Gonzales; Keith and wife Sue of Colfax; Timothy Despino of Pineville; and Mona VanMol and husband Tim of LaCompte
They blessed him with six grandchildren and a host of great grandchildren.
Luther was the last of seven boys. He had a host of extended family, nieces and nephews, and family and friends from church. He ministered all over Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Texas. He tried to retire, but if given a chance to preach, he would do it.
The Despino family would like to express their sincere gratitude to each of you for your love, and kindness shown in your thoughts and prayers and to all those who have supported them during this time of loss. This has been a great comfort. Your continued prayers and support are welcome.
